1. Install VirtualBox.
2. Install Linux or an extra copy of Windows. 3. Install Wine on the Linux if it isn't already installed. 4. Install TS2 and the expansions on Wine. 5. Play TS2. If your computer can't run VirtualBox, install Linux/Windows natively. Google is your best friend when following these instructions. |
Obviously Google hates you because you can't run TS2 in Wine, it flat out won't work.
Windows 8 is built upon the same codebase as Windows 7, what's with all the hate? Personally, I just think some people hate change and don't want to move on, Metro isn't that bad and anyway there's plenty of Start Menu replacements e.g. iObit Start Menu 8 which makes Windows 8 essentially a much faster and updated Windows 7.
People who haven't actually tried Windows 8 yet still "hate" it are completely ignorant, it's just as good as Windows 7 if not better, you should try it for at least a few days if not longer before you say you hate it. I didn't like Windows 8 but then when I tried it I loved it, now it's my favourite Windows OS.

Does anybody with a previous version of Windows have the TS2UPD and T2SUPD0 files in their base game that they could send me? I don't know if it would work but it's all I can think of :/

I just want to note that IObit has its negative points. Many techies ... including mine ... do not recommend going within 10 feet of it.
Why? One reason is that should you ever decide to uninstall it, it's a pain in the butt. The Uninstaller does a woeful job of removing all the files and entries.
Even after uninstalling IOBit off a laptop because someone was entranced by all its features and it turned out that keeping it on the computer was a bad idea for our situation, I wound up with files that uninstaller clearly missed. I used an IObit removal tool AFTER the uninstaller and after removing several files through searching. I still had 322 files on the system. No, that's not a typo. 322 files. Oh, and one registry entry. I STILL think I missed a few files.
Install only after reading pros and cons, and with caution. I advise doing a bit of Googling before installing. Some people think it's great. Others think it's invasive and introduces rogue software and even malware.
I know my daughter managed to get the Start menu back on her laptop installing any third-party programs.

Is that Advance System Care or the actual StartMenu 8 app?

That is the Advanced System Care. But after the fiasco we had with that, I would be wary of going anywhere near IOBit! I don't care if it just offers a cute screensaver.
In all fairness, though, I haven't seen as many negative reviews about the app. Thankfully.
It's just that for me, any company that would resort to the practices IOBit has employed, even with a different program, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That's the only iObit program I have on my computer, I use Avast for maintenance and security. My Dad has it installed on my other computer and his, he was told to install it by his "computer-savvy" friend.

I'd like to second this. Mine doesn't have it either.
I have the same problem as everyone here (Crashes when i go to CAS. Tried tooons of solutions), i'm going to copy the TSbin TSdata files from an XP computer, but I only have the base game on that, i have all the EP and SP on my laptop, i can still just paste it to the base game, right?
EDIT: Well, I did it. Didn't work.

Fair enough, I find it just like W7 but slightly faster with the StartMenu 8 app.

It worked!! A very kind person on youtube, who had uploaded a video about how to make Sims 2 work on Windows 8, uploaded her TSBin and TSData folders for me to put on my computer. It now says "The Sims 2 is already up to date" and I can install my expansion packs.
If anybody would like the link please PM me.

^Ah, so thats only for installing? I already got mines installed, it just crashes in CAS...
I think i'm about to downgrade to win7 (Not only for the sims, but other reasons. Don't tell me win8 is better and I shouldn't. I don't care...) does anyone know if this will still make sims 2 incompatible? Like, will installing win7 make it so that all the games that are compatible with win7 work again, or...?

I believe that you'll have to reinstall all of your games, but that Windows 7 is much more compatible than Windows 8.

For anyone still having problems, I posted what I did to successfully install the game and my expansion packs back on Page 7 (maybe page 9 or 10 if you're not logged onto the website) of this article. That was in February, I believe, and I've been running Sims 2 ever since with no problems. Hope it's helpful to you!

Hi guys.
I am having an issue I have installed all my games using the grumpyloader method found on this site. Very helpful. I have patched All games accordingly but whenever I try to load Mansion and garden it loads the launcher I click play and it does nothing??. I have tried running directly from the sim2EP9.exe it does nothing no launching of the game.
If i double click a different exe example, seasons it loads the splashscreen and then wrong cd error.
I have installed all Expansions and stuff packs in correct order and installing patches straight after the expansion.
why wont mansion and gardens work on windows 8. I want to play my sims 2 on windows 8. I have tried running it in compatibility mode makes no difference.
Curse windows 8
Any help appreciated .
Cheers
Nathan

I hope you can downgrade to Windows 7. I heard it will run Sims 2 a lot better. Windows 8 sucks worse than 95!

It's so weird that some of you have this problem. The laptop that I have now was a gift to me earlier on this year and it came with Windows 8. I installed the sims and some of the stuff and expansion packs with no problem and it runs fine. I have Double Deluxe and mainly the combo packs though. Maybe it's a problem with the singular Sims 2 and expansions?

It is plain possible that the issues lie on initial releases of the game. The whole crap has 16 units and it not everyone who buys further releases of the same things. I have 3 full sets of TS2 and never planned to buy any combos or Deluxe extras. We have unfortunately to live with the fact that all initial releases are garbage productions. It is very unlikely to have backwards solutions, so one have to live with a problem - or find the solution self.

So, there is no way to run Sims 2 on Windows 8 ? ABSOLUTELY?
Very interested, as i am making some modification.
Also, GTA IV/ELFC runs on Win 8, but not always, maybe game version is important.
UPD: I've found the topic How to make Sims 2 run on Windows 8, so i hope it is the solution.

Just FYI:

I'm doubtful that this would do anything to change EA/Maxis' minds but I'll try anything...

I purchased a new desk top, all the bells and whistles,Invidia Gforce, etc.
Ironically I bought it to, of course, play Sims 2, Morrowind, Skyrim, other games like Sims 3.
Windows 8 -I've been using it for about 2 months. I keep asking myself, 'what were they thinking?' It's all about 'apps', which Microsoft wants desperately to cram down your collective throats. If you are the type that simply likes a lot of color on your screen, and wants to be entertained by Microsoft, have at it. There are TWO screens, and as such, you have to keep switching from one screen to the other. It's all very confusing unless you're a techie. Just a note - the old solitaire games are also gone. You can google all the lamenters -people miss the old games.
I was successful installing all the games up through Seasons. The good news is, colors are brighter, you can see shadows and things you couldn't see before. It all looks brand new. You just can't play the game well. One problem I have is with the mouse, which can't pick anything up or set it down correctly. I'm hoping someone here might have an answer to that problem.
Although Skyrim isn't that old, I can't play it at all. Again, some problem with the cursor in the game.
Morrowind plays to a point, then dies.
The Sims 3, nice colors, but I haven't had a lot of luck even with the base game.
Two days ago I brought out my old laptop from storage. If I knew then what I know now..
