The swimmable lake tutorial can work for the base game with or without EP1 UNI, but not with EP2 NL or above, for the original swim pool tool has been changed to make some diagonal pool and (what else? can't think of if there's any other reason) from EP2 NL. Let's see if someone makes a breakthrough for the swim pool tool...!

Yet, you can try the terrain paint approach in which one paints the terrain as if it's a lake or else.
You can try this tutorial or search at the Sims2 site for "lake tutorial"

HabboArwen -- SWIM in a lake!
http://thesims2.ea.com/exchange/sto...?asset_id=20008

This's the most common approach for lakes right now. As for the experimental ones are still in trying, there'd not be any tutorial yet.

There're a few ways to make one, and each way has its goods and bads, so make your own decision.

1. The pool tool approach
Sunni9676 -- Swimmable Lakes (for TS2 and/or UNI only, Nl or above not working)
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=85093
Goods: it's shapable by terrain tools, one can use terrain paints to do the "water" bed to further decorate it, very flexible when used properly. with wavy animation.
Bads: easy to mess up when not used properly, not NL or above compatible due to the change in the pool tool since NL.

2. the terrain-paint/ground-cover approach. A neat tutorial is:
tkdjunkie
Tutorial: The Swimmable Lake Illusion
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=131752
Goods: It's very flexible, compatible to all known game versions up to this moment. can look very good and realistic.
Bads: no "water" layers, sims can still randomly swim out of the area through the same pool accessories they enter the lake, even with elevation blocking, visible or invisible impassible object barrier, but this happens rarely. No wavy animation yet.

3. the water tool approach -- it takes the water tool to make the lake while adding an invisible layer for the sims to swim above the "water".
Goods: simes can swim on a "water" layer for all game versions up to this moment. Flexible shapes for the lake/pool/pond/sea but squary swimming region.
Bads: no animation yet. Hard to make it look good. Terrible tile glitch (need lots of objects to cover up). Still "experimental". No tutorial yet, but a note only.

Just skip the the use of the pool tool, and ignore the wavy look by the TS2 pool tool.

how come whenever i go upstairs, i cannot see the furniture downstairs? I can see the sims, what they are doing, but it seems like they are, for example, flying in air when sitting. Please help.

I`m new here also, so... Hi! :D

This fake pool approach may help make "floating pools".

May read Jonesi's Upper level/roof "fake" pool tutorial..

hey everyone, I know this will sound VERY stupid, but there's no water in my lake
it's all... black
I mean... it's just a hole in the ground with no water in it. Do I have to add it? Is there something wrong with my game?
Help, please...

sealed_lilith,

Can you show a screenshot of what the lot you're talking about is supposed to look like and probably along with a screenshot to show the one you're seeing?

There're several ways to do a lake... Each way has its goods, bads and requirements. You can check the tutorial sections to name what tutorials appear to what you're talking about. Would you mind telling your game versions (say, TS2 alone, TS2-NL, all EPs but no FFS SP, etc...)

But anyway,
1. if you mean the terrain paint approach, then you're probably missing the corresponding terrain paints. Sometimes, terrain paints disappears without causing blue flashing.
2. if you mean sunni's type of lake, the water layers will disappear in game versions with NL, OFB, any higher EP, FFS SP or any higher SP. Only the base game and EP1-UNI will have them presented properly.
3. if you mean the floor tile approach, then you're missing floor tiles....
4. if you mean the water tool approach, then something is wrong in the lot file and/or the game copy, better delte the former and/or reinstall the latter. Good luck...
5. if you mean an object-based lake, then you may miss some parts of an object.
6. if you mean a lake done by the neighbourhood water, then you'll have to place the lot in a neighbourhood with low landline or high water line.
7. others if any, so please specify what you mean...

So, giving out more infos can help clearify your situation.

May also try to search "sunni9676" or "lake tutorial" for infos with "search this thread" located beside the "star" rating on the top right-hand-side of this thread. Or use the browser's "find/search/seek" feature @ the "edit" menu bar.

Default niol
I have TS2 alone and I've created the lake in a lot with the terrain water tool.
The problem is the lakes not blue it's black or red. Do you think it's because I leveled the terrain and then created the lake ?

sealed_lilith - your water being black or red is a graphics card issue and quite a common one. I suggest you head to the Tech Help forums and do a search on *red water* for your answers =)

I really hate the swimmable lakes that use the swimming pool - they look horribly unnatural to me. I went and looked at the Simpage for Habbowen (she wrote a great swim lake tute) but the tute has gone. However....being as how I keep copies of everything - I have attached a copy in word format for anyone who needs it.

And as an addon - you can use moon_eze's invisible fence around the lake to stop the sims from swimming out onto the land. If you do that - the *4 click edge* rule doesn't apply.

Loverat,

Oh yes, I forgot about this age-olde hardware problem... :bandit:

All,

Actually, tkdjunkie made the following tutorial simply owing to the disappearance of Habbowen's. So, may also take this one as a reference.
The Swimmable Lake Illusion
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=131752

Habbowen has made sme other tutorials though. May check out the tutorial listings in this post.
