Most of the other comments can be explained by the budget restriction (empty walls, corridor to nowhere, etc). I can't tell you how many times that I made changes, removals, etc, to get the units under budget, which involved creating a copy, changing zoning and moving a Sim in. I was, in all honesty, fed up by the time I was done (and forgot the pathway lighting).
Lots of apartment complexes have no common area and I figured cheap ones would not anyway.

No. My second round had no burglar alarms at all, as I mentioned in the description. It's just that all the apartments in my complex this round have a burglar alarm - except one! That's the sort of lack of attention to detail that costs points with most judges. |
It's definitely not due to lack of attention to detail, I just don't use them. But then, I also don't have such a thing in my house IRL either. It just comes down to play style I think, but I don't think judging on that is fair. But, I choose cell phones in my game over the other phones, and the judges every round comment (and maybe deduct points) for not seeing phones in the apartments. I don't have a landline phone IRL either, just a cellphone. I understand lack of trash bins, which I have btw, you just can't see them.

Really, the way burglars work in TS2 is unrealistic. They shouldn't sneak in at night when you're at home, they should come during the day while you're at work. |
but there will be witnesses!!!
unless you live in a quiet subburb where daylight means making your street a ghost town hahaha the town house I lived in melbourne had a motion sensor burglar alarm which baffles me really---how does it differentiate between me and the bad guy???? how does it even work???? does it go wooooooooo when it sensed a black and white striped sweater and a ski mask like the sims?

Speaking of required pics, I didn't realize I went over! @gummilutt, do you know if I had pictures that weren't really required, or if I just went over with my unit pictures? To confirm, it's 32 plus the front, back, ground floor of the entire lot, then a floor plan of each floor in every structure? And then, rent?
So for me, with 5 buildings that would have been, 3 with 3 floors and 2 with 2 floors, that would be... 32 + 16 = 48 pictures plus rent? Or is my math off somewhere?
About the burglar thing, though, I don't always build with them, and more often than not leave out all alarms for a little random risk, but if I'm going to the trouble of putting alarms everywhere, I just include them for completeness, I guess.

Judge 3: I adore the lot! I want to live there myself! Looks like luxury but it still is cheap. One question tho, why is there a hole in the top roof? Is it for the sun to shine to the balcony? Also loved that you used different wallpaper combinations inside rooms, makes them look more ”decorated”. |
I know if I made it all one level, I could do it much cheaper. But, I want a loft, daggity-nabbit!
I think I've got it sorted now - 4 units with 2 single beds in a shared room (like in a twin's room or a dorm) fully decked out, with the rent at $945 for each unit. Whew! That was a challenge All this to say - You guys ROCK

You turn the motion sensor on when you leave, so it knows any movement it detects is not you. If you want the sensor to be active at night, or if you have pets in the house, the installers need to take care where they put the sensors so they don't generate false alarms from you going to the bathroom in the middle of the night or your cats deciding to play "the floor is lava."

that's good to know ^^ no wonder they didnt put any bathroom doors in the hall! our bathroom was a jack and jill type that went from my room to my mom's. It's just us and she's mighty protective so it's all cool.
--but what if the motion sensors are on and I wanted a midnight snack???-- dagnabit!
--anyways I unknowingly made my round 4 entry by making a dorm with 4 units and had a common area that had access to upstairs. There's room for 2 more units up and I'm---I just switched the doors! Hahaha
the problem is I decorated the thing with CC cos it was for personal use. guess I gotta make a no-cc version lmao

Required pics
The front and back were too wide to view face on, so are angled.
Floor plans:
Whole lot, ground floor:
Upper storey
I have additional closer-up floor plans but didn't include them thinking it would be over the picture limit. I can add if need be.
Now inside the units, starting with unit 1, which covers two levels.
Not pictured is the bedroom with double bed. There is a coat rack in the corner. This is only meant to be decorative.
Unit 2
One of the residents of unit 2 is a flamboyant artist with eclectic tastes. I have not included a pic of her bedroom. Her room-mate has more conservative tastes.
Unit 3
Unit 3 is a small unit in which two male friends live.
Unit 4
Unit 4 residents are a well-travelled professional couple and their student room-mate. Her bedroom is not pictured.
Unit 5
Unit 5 residents are a couple of female Sims.
Unit 6
The last unit is another two-level unit in which two friends reside. One of them is fond of roosters and sews a lot. The other likes to keep fit.
Not pictured are the second bedroom and the downstairs lounge and computer desk.
It was very difficult to narrow the pics down to 4 per unit!
Now for the extra eight pics which includes the common area.
The balcony of unit 1
The balcony of unit 6
The barbecue area at the front:

Additional shots You may add an additional 8 shots of the structure (what part you show is up to you), and an additional 6 for each unit up to a maximum of 24 pictures. So 32 + required screenshots is the most you could have. Note: Picture limits were raised for round 2 and on. Numbers listed above are the round 2 and onward limits. |

This building has five apartments: one suitable for two people; one for two people or a couple and a singleton; one for three people/couples; one for four people; and the last for two adults not in a relationship, a child and a toddler.
All apartments have phones, smoke alarms and either a bin, trash compactor or trash chute, and I've pointed out their locations in the picture descriptions. There is also a burglar alarm in the communal entrance, and a smoke alarm out by the grill.

@yavannatw So you can have 6 pictures per unit |
But it says maximum of 24 - 6x4=24.

To be honest I don't think that's very clear. You can have a maximum of 32 screenshots. |
So 24 plus the 8 structure ones is 32.

She hopes she can have her computer fixed till the deadline, so, for now, no extensions for this round. We will see IF she gets her computer to work by then, if not she will see if she is going to exted the judging and the round4.

Yes you are correct.
I assume gummi had in mind that only 4 units are mandatory as you can only have 4 families in an apartment building. Otherwise if you have like 11 units and take 6 pics of all plus 8 PLUS reguired you would end up to near 100 pics :D
6 pics per unit, maximum 24 + 8 optional structure/or unit =32 . Naturally plus the reguired pics.
At least this is how I understood it. I can be wrong and heavily indeed :D
And as you have 6 units you had only 4 per unit.

Trash cans, I do love having one in every apartment - no matter where the trash chute is located. Something about walking every frozen dinner to the outside trash bugs me.
Burglar alarms, in poorer housing no of course I wouldn't expect to see them. Some apartments look very nice from the outside, so I would just assume they would be protected, and on the flip of that who can afford to replace items if you're already poor. (I suppose when I check for the alarms, I check for both smoke and burglar, especially if the housing is nice.)
Smoke/fire alarm or at least a sprinkler seem almost mandatory.
Going forward, I will just skip looking for the burglar alarms, as it probably does come down to play style and it seems like a divided topic.
Charmful, I am very happy to hear your flowers from round one had no wilting despite not being able to reach them. That is good information for me to have!
HugeLunatic, I understand the cell phone issue, but honestly hardly any of my Sims have them. Eeep! So having them in an apartment when you're starting out saves some money.
PhantomKnight, I'll look over your score notes on my end and edit that with Gummi - I'm sure I did deduct a half point and yes, they are there. Thank you for pointing them out!
Please know that while I am VERY green at judging and having a seasoned keen eye, I appreciate the comments you all leave and will be more active for the next rounds so I'm more visible. Everyone is doing so well, and I am so impressed at the different buildings being presented. Well done, all of you. You're inspiring me to build again myself (which may or may not be good, haha). Thank you all for your patience with me.

This building is based on several military barracks I've either lived in or had family living in, with the colours and materials used on the floors and walls influenced by those and by other military buildings I've been in throughout my life. The common spaces are also ones I've seen within the same buildings as quarters. One common space I left out was an eating mess/dining hall; every unit has a kitchen, and the sims can use them. I did include the club/recreational areas of a mess, with a formal section based on an officer's mess I remember visiting and one all-ranks game area. There are also some training spaces.
With the sims, you may or may not get roommates in the military career track, but there are plenty of occupations in the military and several maxis careers can be interpreted in such a way that they could indicate military employment. I have no problem with the idea pretending they are military sims or using cheats, mods, or SimPE to give them a new career.
Each unit is appropriate for different purposes (short term housing while on course, long term course housing, or long term postings) and for different ranks (length of stay tends to be more determinate of housing than rank, but officers usually have more space and privacy).
Unit 4 is meant for up to 8 sims on basic training, either officer or enlisted. It's not too long a course, but there is little privacy, a lot of restrictions on time and personalizing the space, and daily inspections.
Unit 3 is meant for up to 6 sims, of any rank on short courses or at low rank (jr officer or enlisted) for long term courses. There is some freedom to personalize the space, but the choice of blankets is limited to one of 3 and the rooms are subject to weekly inspections.
Unit 2 is meant for 4 sims, in unmarried quarters for long term housing and at low rank, but it's a definite step up from unit 3, as the only inspections are annuals by base fire or by building maintenance if there's a problem. Each roommate actually has a private room and bathroom.
Unit 1 is meant for 3 sims, either fairly high ranking officers on course or mid-rank officers staying in quarters for a long posting.
The lot is 5x3, with 3 floors plus roof access. There are four units and lots of common space. Originally there were five units, but I replaced the fifth with more common areas on the second floor.
The flagpole is made of the deco pipes with the Fourth Element tapestry on a 45 degree angle and off-grid placement. The windows are tbudgett's 1 tile Lafenetre Smooth Top Kitchen windows. http://nandonalt.modthesims.info/download.php?t=296632
The back has a pool area and an obstacle course, expanded with climbing bars and balance boards made from rail tie garden edging. There are two BBQ spaces - one by the pool and one on the roof above unit 1.
Common areas are all spaces that have the grayish carpet with green squares, the rooms with light herringbone wood and the adjoining brown tile bathroom, the gym, and the bathrooms with green and white tile walls. Unit 1 is on the left with the garage; it has two floors and all of it's floors except the bathrooms are wood plank. Unit 1's access is either through the garage or off the common hallway by the driveway. Unit 4 is on the right with green walls, cream and beige linoleum, and brown carpet. It also has two floors, and its access is to the front of the building.
One of the stairwells uses mirrored versions of the spiral stairs - it's the one by the piano in the formal club area.
The car in the driveway is meant to be a base vehicle, for use for duty purposes by those in the barracks. Unit 1 is the only unit with a private garage.
The second floor has the rest of units 1 and 4 and more common spaces with the colourings mostly consistent with the common areas on the first floor. I apologize for not using tab mode cameras for this floor, but for some reason every time I tried that, the texture of the driveways appeared over the floors in the classroom area (common area with green and cream linoleum floor).
Unit 2 is on the left, with the mustard kitchen/living areas and the pastel bedrooms. Its access is off the hallway near the center of the building. The roof area on this level is accessed by the dark wood spiral stairs from floors 1 and 2's common areas (far left of building). Unit 3 is on the right, with its access also off the center hallway. The center hall is being used for storage by the art and astronomy clubs that meet on the roof.
The large roof area has an area of paving stones over the tar and gravel roof to make a narrow deck area that is a mostly unofficial hangout area. It started as a completely unauthorized space that someone had placed a hammock in, and then the astronomy club asked permission to use the roof, and the space slowly developed. The chess boards, benches and lighting were installed, and then someone somehow got permission to put a couple of hot tubs up here - in real life, someone on course in the barracks would have bought a cheap child's wading pool and filled it using buckets, and a hot tub was as close as sims have. The astronomy club didn't like the lights that were installed at along most of the paved area, so they placed more paving stones to the other side of the stairwell where there are no lights for better star gazing. An art club has started meeting at the lit end of the roof.
The air conditioning or utility boxes on the roof are made from stages with metal floor and sidings, and edged with Sunni's alias edge smoother in pipebomb (cc fence).
The last entire lot floor plan shot is almost identical to the first roof shot, it just has the stairwell roof and the edging I used around it. I'm putting it under another spoiler:
Unit 1: Senior officers on course or anyone on long postings.
rent - $4 565
# of bedrooms - 3, with each bedroom having a sitting area/private living room, closet, bedroom with double bed, and a bathroom.
# of bathrooms - 4 (1 full four piece bath/bedroom, plus a 3 piece bath on the first floor)
phones - 1/living space, by the door, plus one in the kitchen between the arch and the laundry area
smoke detector - above range, between hood and cabinets
trash - compactor in the kitchen next to refridgerator
Each suite in this unit has the same desk, chair, sofa, closet, bed, bedside table, rug (in one of two colors), and blinds. After that, the residents are free to decorate however they want in their own space but they can't change the walls and floors. The military supplied all the common area furnishings.
The entry is in the bottom right off the common area hall. All of unit one has light wood floors, baseboards, and some paneling. The main floor has a common sitting area and kitchen at the top of the picture, with bedroom and private sitting area 1 at the bottom of the image. The person is room 1 is a bookworm very interested in music, and has added some electronics, artwork, curtains, a blue rug, and a violin to their space, as well as three nice bookshelves. The green bathroom by the stairs is part of this unit.
The odd white boxes behind the curtain in the kitchen are supposed to be a washer and dryer. Laundry is always an issue in barracks, so I wanted each unit to have something to represent it. They were made by stacking OFB cubes on OFB displays and using a picture of a dog (very cheap wallhanging) turned backwards to make a door. I placed the two pictures off grid and backwards, and then moved the OFB display into place. The laundry in unit 3 was made the same way, while for 1 and 2 I used a similar technique to make a stacked washer/dryer. I wanted to find something round to use for the washing machine door, but I couldn't find a shiftable object the right size, so the washer and dryer look identical. Oh well. There is a better picture of the side by side version with the unit 3 pictures.
The second floor has two suites. The first is inhabited by an electronic game- and movie-loving slob, who is just out of quarters with regular inspections for the first time (taking advantage of that to leave laundry everywhere). Despite the tv in the living room, this sim has their own tv, game system, and a high end computer. To keep down dust, this sim has not added any extra rugs or curtains. In the final suite is a plant lover who also formed the art club that meets on the roof. Not interested in electronics, this sim has filled every surface available, and some of the walls, with plants and art supplies. The curtains, art, and rugs all remind this sim of nature.
The phone is by the archway on the wall in the bottom left, the trash compacter is by the fridge, the smoke detector is by the range hood, and as with the last round, the cabinets are wine racks with holiday bells for handles. There is no dishwasher, but none of the other units got one either - military sims do dishes by hand.
Unit 2: Jr Officers or NCMs on long postings, when the nice suites in unit 1 are full.
rent - $2 892
# of bedrooms - 4, with each bedroom having a sitting area/private living room, closet, bedroom with double bed, and a bathroom.
# of bathrooms - 4 (1 full bath/bedroom)
phones - 1 in the hall, just around the corner from the dining table.
smoke detector - above range, between hood and rack of cooking pans
trash - trash can between the last counter and the entry door
I need to explain the colours. That mustard was the colour of the living room and kitchen of one of the first PMQs (personal married quarters) I remember living in as a child. It was high gloss, it clashed with everything (including the odd linoleum flooring and counters that were built into the building) and I hated it. I still avoid deep yellow and orange in most decorating now. As an adult, after I was commissioned I spent two years living in quarters that were very similar this unit (well, the individual rooms; the common area was smaller and lacked a table, though it had a sink and stove-top). The colour in those real quarters was dingy green, but the common area was so dark it very much reminded me of the mustard house. The pastel colours in the bedrooms of this unit are a bit of a mix; I was in one barracks once that had peach walls, but I've seen PMQs built with pastel siding - each house a different pastel than its neighbour, with the occasional bright red or blue thrown in just to jar the eye. The individual room colours in this unit come from that - no matter how you hate it, you can't paint over it and just have to make do.
I swear, the half the time the military buys building supplies from the discount rack and gets whatever odds and ends are left over once other large developers take their pick. Either that or those in charge of supervising the final building stages of quarters are colour blind.
Other military buildings tend to be reasonably coordinated, or neutral, or fairly bland and utilitarian, so the other units and common areas in this build have their decor inspired by those other buildings.
Each bedroom has 2 counters, a clothes rack, a decent bed, a desk and chair and blinds supplied by the military. Again, the military supplied the living room and kitchen furnishings, but the residents have stocked the kitchen shelves. The treadmill belongs to the surfer in the pink bedroom but they share it with everyone. The phone, trash can, and smoke detector are all visible in the floor-plan shot, and the white boxes in the alcove across from the phone are the laundry machines. They are best seen in the next shot:
The sim in this blue room has their own minifridge and microwave, and loves to read, camp and hike. This sim is the one that placed the hammock on the roof, and they've added a couple of bookshelves, a chair, and a rug to the room along with the appliances.
This sim loves music and hates the purple walls. They've hung up dark curtains and bedding to try to make it less saccharine, but they still aren't happy with the mauve. If they have to stay in this room, the walls will eventually be completely covered in posters. Nobody else in this unit even drinks coffee; this sim has an espresso machine on their counter.
This sim doesn't care for the sage walls one way or another, but if stuck with it, they might as well coordinate their bedding and make a wall hanging to go with it. As well as quilting, this sim (supposedly) made the teddy bear on the counter. Both the bed and the sewing machine are usable; sims can even get in and out of bed while someone sews.
This sim is tired of courses and postings to inland bases. They want to take their sofa, guitar, and surfboard to a coast for a a long term posting (two or three years in a row in the same city would be nice).
Unit 3: Mostly for those on short courses, though I've seen similar rooms used by officer cadets and privates for longer terms.
rent - $3 619
# of bedrooms - 3, each bedroom has 2 twin beds, 2 desks and chairs, 2 closets, and a bookshelf.
# of bathrooms - 2, with each having 2 toilet stalls, 2 communal showers, and a private tub with shower.
phones - 1 on the wall around the corner from the fridge, visible in the floor plan shot (on the wall adjoining the bathtub)
smoke detector - above range, between hood and window
trash - compactor in the kitchen, top left corner of the floor plan shot below the coffee maker
The residents have some freedom to add furnishings and wall hangings to their rooms, even if they still have a room standard for their bed and closets and have issued curtains. Bedroom 1 (green and blue beds) is for a violinist who decorated with travel pictures and an alien enthusiast who hopes to be abducted during an astronomy club meeting. Bedroom 2 (green beds) is for a sports enthusiast and a music lover. The music lover is the only resident without their own computer. Bedroom 3 (blue and purple beds) is for a craft lover and for someone fairly homesick - they've got a shelf with toys from home and pictures from family and friends on a bulletin board over their desk but the picture didn't make the cut.
The phone is visible on the right, and the smoke detector is above the stove. This is the best angle for a picture that I managed of any of the laundry spaces.
The building I based this unit on had a hobby area in the basement, and since the kitchen linoleum is fairly easy to clean, the residents of this unit got a hobby corner. The resident with the purple bedding and art supplies left on the desk in bedroom 3 has been filling the shelves with pottery.
Unit 4: Meant for those on basic training
rent - $4 629
# of bedrooms - 1, with 8 curtained off areas each containing 1 cheap twin bed, 1 clothes rack, 1 side table with drawers, and 1 wall light, and 1 issued carpet
# of bathrooms - 2, with each having 2 toilet stalls, 2 sinks, 3 communal showers, and a stacked washer/dryer.
phones - 1 on the desk by the door on the first floor, 1 on the desk closest to the door to the bedroom.
smoke detector - above the window beside the stove
trash - compactor in the kitchen, beside the stove and under the smoke detector.
The two desks by the apartment door are meant to be manned at night by a student (resident) on duty. The open space between the desks and couch is large enough for the squadron/platoon/section that lives here to form up; they'll be marching to work or their next training classes together. The form up space has a portrait of the base commander. The kitchen has some air related deco, but the residents could be from any military branch or a mix of all branches - its just common basic training. The living area has a tv and bookshelf, but more importantly it has the awards won by past members of this training unit, so new members can aspire to match their greatness.
Two bathrooms and a single large bedroom for eight. All of the furniture, most of the deco, and the computers are issued by the military with the residents having little say in how the room looks. The only spot they can display any individuality is on their bedside tables, and those must be kept neat. A couple of residents have photos or drawings from home, one has an alarm clock to wake up everyone, one has books and one has a cactus.
The bulletin board above the desk has pictures and letters from home or from school kids that residents are sharing; a child's drawing of a fish can make even the course warrant officer smile.
The entertainment unit is placed at the front of the alcove, with wine rack and wedding bell cabinets above it to make a built-in unit. The corner is full of memorabilia of unit victories, mostly in sport competition against other training units.
The bulletin board on the left is used throughout this apartment building - all units have one, and the common areas have a couple as well. The boards contain rules, duty rosters, and announcements or advertisements from various clubs on the base. This unit has two sinks, as there are likely to be more than one sim doing dishes and sims may also have to wash their kit as they come in from the field.
Dull and fairly sterile sleeping spaces, but at least the curtains give the illusion of privacy. The phone is just visible on the desk.
On the left is a formal mess area, with a fireplace, bar, a piano, quiet games, and some seating areas. The hall at the main entrance to the building has a desk for the duty watch officer - they'll be keeping track of anyone who enters through these doors, doing patrols of the common areas, and responding to any emergencies that come up in the building. There is a phone on the watch officer's desk and the student on duty in unit 4 will report to them. Since there is a duty watch post, the building completely lacks burglar alarms.
The gym consists of weight machines, with a couple of ballet bars and room to work out around the stereo. The building's air conditioning is inconsistent, so the room has ceiling fans. There are no treadmills - sims can go jogging together if they (or their unit) want to run. The bathrooms off the gym are the only gendered doors in the building.
The herringbone floor area is a continuation of the formal mess area, but this space is a bit more relaxed than the main floor. It has two dart boards, a widescreen tv, a computer, and an espresso machine. It can only be accessed by either the stairs in the formal area or from the stairs by unit 1's entrance. The rest of the common areas on this floor are accessed from the elevator or stair well by the center of the building. On the left, there is a classroom, a storage locker (weapons lock-up), a computer and library area, a bathroom, and a small office - there is a phone on the wall outside the office. On the right is an all-ranks recreation room with games, seating, and a bar.
This is the hallway on the third floor. The art club is using this end for storing their materials, while the astronomy club uses the corner behind the camera. The doors to units 2 and 3 are visible, as is the trash chute. Each floor has a trash chute in the common area, on the wall to the left of the elevator.
The screen/blackboard/smartboard is an H&M picture turned backwards and placed with cheats.
The formal area's bar and game area, with the customary picture of the queen on the wall.
The fireplace was made by first placing connecting columns, then a mirror, and then the fireplace using cheats. Cheats were also needed to place the piano so close to the column and to place the smoke detector on the side of the column. The fireplace and piano are useable, as is all the seating.
This is accessed from the stairs by unit 1's entrance and is on the third level. There is a smoke detector, and everything on the deck is usable. However, sims sometimes got confused routing from their kitchens to this BBQ, especially sims in units 2 and 3.
This BBQ was easily usable by all sims, and there is a smoke detector on the adjoining wall. The pool lanes are just dark tile floors. The shrub fence is this one: http://modthesims.info/d/552504
