The Haiders
So, a little story to tell: Last week I had the week off from my summer job (I mentioned my seasonal job in my post about the Kovax family), so I figured I would get working on my SimVille project again, given the fact that I had so little time to play the game for about an entire month.[1]Well, get this: time flies. I came home on Saturday. Sunday I had church. Monday I had to go downtown for some business. Tuesday and Wednesday I worked on my custom content catalog. I only started to write this on Thursday. Now it's Sunday and I'm finishing this up quickly before I have to go. Man, time sure does fly by...
...and Thursday was a big loss of time as well. I installed the Windows 10 Creators Update onto my laptop, which sucked up 90+ minutes of my day. To my dismay, The Sims 2 wouldn't boot up after the update was finished (This happened with the Anniversary Update as well), but I wasn't keen on rolling back the update, so I tried to uninstall the game... which didn't work because the uninstallers wouldn't even start up. So I had to manually uninstall the whole darn game.[2] Then I had to reinstall the entire game, which actually went by smoothly; only problem was that it took a lot of time. Install the patches (installing the University patch is a nightmare that needs GrumpyLoader and Tylenol to get through... thank goodness I have Double Deluxe and BG/NL which are already patched), restore my user data and my custom content from backup, configure my graphics rules settings to get the game's graphics to behave on my laptop, small tweaks here and there, and then testing (with fingers crossed!) the game to see if it worked. It worked, thankfully... but I was spent.
Anyways, enough blathering. Hopefully the SimVille project can continue with...
The Haider Family
Quote:
Things have been rough for the Haiders. They've always lived in poverty without much hope or opportunity to progress up the social ladder. Will SimVille open up a few doors for them? |
Recently SimVille has been flooded with a wave of immigrants from poor backgrounds. While they're not exactly slums, the apartments they live in are small and overcrowded, and the family sizes are often huge, with lots of children placing great burden on the parents, who find it difficult to earn a living while simultaneously caring for them. The Haiders happen to be one of those families, and while they're not necessarily starving, they don't have much to hope for.
Poverty is a theme I have been exploring in The Sims recently, and the Haiders were the first family I created under this theme. I may create some more Sims with this theme someday, which should change SimVille from being thought of as a relatively middle-class-to-wealthy town to one inhabited by poor, large, and financially unstable families. SimVille is going through a change–will the existing residents be able to bounce back, or will they flee the town to escape the influx?
The Sims
Allan Haider
Quote:
Allan's a hard worker, but he's not particularly specialized in anything. He can do a wide variety of jobs, but hasn't mastered any of them. |
Jack of all trades, master of none. That's what describes Allan, who's no stranger of working long, tedious hours for low pay, no benefits, and little hope of ever advancing up the career ladder. That is just part of the reality that Sims living in the dark, almost unseen side of SimNation have to face every single day. Allan is a high school dropout, has virtually nothing of value to show for in his résumé, and has never really had a real job.
Things haven't been all gloom and doom, though; he managed to get a glorious job mixing cement in SimVille, and just recently got promoted to the brick layer position in the Architecture career. It's tedious work, and he's frequently tired, sore, and hungry at just about every hour of the day, but he's happy that his family is seeing some form of progression, no matter how small.
I must warn you, however: I have a little note regarding this Sim inside my little "TS2 notes.txt" file. Someday you'll see what that note says. Someday...
Alisha Haider
Quote:
Life has been "work work work" for Alisha since she was born. She's forgotten what it means to be free. |
Work can quickly become a prison: it always needs to be done, and you will always lose time from your day doing it. Both Sims and humans in the real world have methods of leaving this prison, whether it be a hobby we like doing, or a group of friends we like to hang out with, or a vacation, or even just quality time with family members. For Alisha, however, finding time to rest and play has always been a challenge. Her mother was fairly strict with her as a child: she, along with her siblings, were up early in the morning and stayed up late at night, either cleaning the house, cooking meals for the family, doing their homework, or washing the clothes. There was virtually no time left over after all their chores for them to have any fun. Alisha finds herself stuck in that same circle again in adulthood... will SimVille be able to change that?
It sort of did. Alisha has a tad bit more free time now than she ever did during her childhood and adolescence, and her neighbours frequently invite her and her family to join them on the roof of the apartment for hamburgers and music. Still, work has been so engrained into Alisha's flesh that her focus is stuck on work from the moment she wakes up to the second before she drifts asleep. Alisha believes that hard work brings wealth, and it does... but if it's the only thing on one's mind, it can also bring poverty in a different form.
Alex Haider
Quote:
Uh oh! Looks like Alex has outgrown her roots, and now there isn't enough room in the family for her! How will she fare as the oldest sibling in the house? |
Nobody ever said it was easy being the oldest sibling. Alex had always been tasked with the responsibility of caring for her younger brothers and sisters once they started popping out of the oven. Rumour has it that Allan and Alisha want a fifth child, so that's going to be even more work! But having another sibling is the least of Alex's worries, for the apartment is simply getting way too crowded for all of them to live in. The kids already have to sleep on couches and recliners, and if the new baby comes out, someone's gonna be sleeping in the corridor. With Alex being the eldest and the most experienced, chances are her parents will expect her to willingly sacrifice her spot on the couch for the new arrival. Unsurprisingly, she's not very happy with any of that. But then again, she's old enough to live on her own, isn't she?! She's a teen now, not a baby anymore. She can go find her own place if she wanted to!
Alex has a fairly lukewarm relationship with her family members except for her mother, even though she's still angry at her for even thinking about having another baby. While Allan's a family Sim and would rather have Alex stay (Maybe they'll take turns sleeping[3]), Alisha might decide it would be better if Alex really did find her own place, not just because there would be one less mouth to feed, but also because the apartment really is too crowded for all of them to live in. Alex needs space, she figures, and if she's able to save enough on her own to rent her own apartment, then let her go.
Robby Haider
Quote:
Robby has big dreams but small opportunities. He's a huge hip-hop enthusiast, but it would seem that much of SimNation's hip-hop scene is located underground. |
Hip hop's been very influential throughout the years, and Robby sure has been influenced by it. He longs for an opportunity to build up his creativity skill, get noticed, get signed to a label, and start pursuing his dreams of being a hip-hop artist. While SimNation has tolerated the presence of hip-hop, what with countless radio stations pumping out the genre into the airwaves around the country, it has also seen its share of suppressing the culture and the art, the communities that spring up because of it. These days, hip-hop music is generally discouraged more than banned or forbidden; Robby's friends at school all love hip-hop, and while they don't get in trouble for it, they can certainly sense their principal's disapproval over the beats and the breakings[4] that draw crowds during recess.
Hip-hop also has a pretty bad vibe in general among the wealthy in SimNation. Many rich Sims view hip-hop as an "invention of the poor" and don't affiliate themselves with the culture at all. While it's not illegal, police are often asked by the wealthy to chase hip-hop artists and dancers off the streets. Hip-hop programs for youth are in exceedingly short supply, and most artists and enthusiasts practice underground, often inside private homes. This has made it very difficult for Robby to chase his dreams. Combined with the fact that he's poor and that his family has no voice, he has virtually no avenues of pursuing change in the country.
Crystal Haider
Quote:
Crystal dreams of being the head chef of a five-star restaurant someday. For now, the most she can do is be assistant chef in mom's kitchen. |
Alisha needs a hand in the kitchen, and what better helping hand is there than someone who wants to be a chef themselves? While the most Alex and Robby can make are grilled cheese sandwiches, Crystal has her eyes on the prize–head chef of an exquisite restaurant! Like Robby, however, the fact that she's poor automatically excludes her from the road to the top, as many cooking classes charge an exorbitant sum for enrollment. Still, every time her parents make mac and cheese or lunch meat sandwiches or tuna casserole or just plain old breakfast cereal, the gears in her head get turning about how she could make mealtimes far more interesting. Would maple syrup go well with buttered noodles? What about chocolate sprinkles on meat loaf? Pineapples and mashed potatoes? Can you use avocados in soup? A chef lives within her, and she needs an opportunity to hone her skills... alas, there's none.
Paddy Haider
Quote:
Paddy's not very sociable, but in his mind, he wishes that he could break out of his shell more easily. |
Paddy's the shiest face in the family, but whenever he misses an opportunity to hang out with a friend, he kicks himself in the chin. Paddy wants to be more sociable like his siblings, but at the last minute he finds it more comfortable to slink back and let his family do the talking. When he's not lamenting about his social skills (or lack thereof), he's wishing he had an easel to paint with. Ever since he saw Amar's "paintography"[5], he's been wanting to try his hand at painting. Paddy's predestined hobby is Arts and Crafts, and like his siblings, he wants an opportunity to engage himself in an art and skill! Unfortunately, like his siblings, those opportunities are out of reach... at least, if he wanted to go to art school. FreeTime Recreation Center has some easels he can paint with, but his family's new here, so they still don't know much about the opportunities they do have. Still, the schools in SimNation could use a serious boost in funding... and a drastic change in their philosophy about "inner city kids".
Even without arts and crafts, though, Paddy is comfortable with what he has already–his siblings.
The house
The Haiders live in The Grey Lofts apartments, a slightly modified version of the City Center Lofts apartment that shipped with Apartment Life. It's a pretty cheap lot, but it does offer a home for its tenants.
The Haiders live on the first floor up from the ground. Their apartment is pretty small, too small for all of them to fit in. There is only one bedroom, a bathroom, a closet, and a small living room/kitchen combo. The Haiders have a computer, but there's no room for a TV.
The roof of the building has a bar which, thanks to the Apartments and Shopping, on the same Lot! mod, is staffed by a bartender 24/7. Sims are welcome to order a drink, poured or blended, right here at home. There's a stereo that serves as a great breaking, slap dancing, and hula dancing spot. There are a few tables and chairs and a grill for hamburgers and hot dogs. In short, it's not too bad up here–if you like your neighbours.
The ground floor is very sparse, but at least there's a playground here.
A brief glimpse of life in the Haider family
There's only one bed, which is reserved for the breadwinners of the household. The kids sleep on couches and recliners, like the Days. Fortunately there's enough for everyone, so nobody has to take turns sleeping.
Alisha and Allan are the first ones up. Since the kids sleep in the living room/kitchen area, alarm clocks aren't necessary for waking them up; all the parents have to do is start making breakfast, and the kids are up in a flash.
There's no dining table in the apartment, so the Haiders eat off their laps.
Today's a Tuesday, and Allan needs to be at work by 8AM. His body is still sore from working all day yesterday, and he's still hungry from the light cereal, which was never enough to fill his stomach adequately. Work means money, however, and even though he gets paid peanuts for his job, it's still enough to make ends meet.
At 8AM, the school bus arrives. The Haider kids aren't honour roll students, and while they do their best in school to learn, the fact that they sleep on recliners and couches means that they don't have an incredible lot of energy during the day. School grades in SimNation, as do school grades in the real world, are not an accurate representation of how much a kid learns, and don't take into account factors outside of the school (which I think schools should totally do). Still, with the help of cheats I make sure they're never low enough for the social worker to pay the family a visit.
Alisha doesn't work until 5PM... but that doesn't mean she can just sit around.
She does stop for lunch, though. Leftover cereal, anyone? Like the Torres, the Haiders save up every little bit of food they make and eat it for later. It sometimes results in different family members eating different foods at mealtimes, but hey, as long as they're getting fed, it's all good.
Alex gets home by one. Alisha slips out to buy some groceries. Alex blows off some steam by gaming on the computer for a bit.
If Alex's gonna move out, she's gonna have to find a job first! Unfortunately there aren't any suitable job offerings today.
Robby, Crystal, and Paddy get home by 3. The roundabout is a favourite of the children, and they'll ride it until they throw up. Who needs roller coasters when you have this dizzying ride that you can hop on for free?
Allan's also home by 3, and he is spent! Laying bricks all day has him covered in dirt and dust, so he fancies a hot shower first.
Alisha works from 5 to 9 as a Drive Through Clerk in the Culinary career. Teen pranks, hungry commuters, and timers that all seem to go off simultaneously await her.
Allan prepares a meal for the kids to eat.
Couches and recliners don't offer much energy, so any time lost from sleep is valuable time wasted.
Allan goes to bed too.
Alisha's home by 9, smelling like burgers and fries. She takes a well-deserved shower from all that hard work.
Then bed.
Conclusion
The Haiders are a family that's locked into a cycle of work, work, and more work, with no sense of progression. Allan and Alisha don't make much during the day, Alex has difficulty finding a job, and the landlord takes most of their earnings in the form of rent every week. Whatever's left over is spent on groceries and any other expenses they may incur during the week. By the looks of it, the Haider kids are probably going to be stuck doing what their parents did once they grow up. And their kids. And the kids of their kids. It's that or a life of crime, and with no way out, the latter seems almost appealing to the one desperate for freedom. It doesn't have to be this way, but as long as the stigma and the budget cuts and the flawed philosophy is there, no permanent change will ever happen.
Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for more!

Notes
1. Okay, it was usually because I was too tired. I work as a summer day camp counsellor, and I'm surrounded by children for most of the day. While I'm fine with kids, they sure do tire me out by the end of the day.
2. I followed http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Uninstall and https://webcache.googleusercontent....n&ct=clnk&gl=ca to do this. It involves deleting all of the game's files and folders manually, as well as deleting the registry keys manually (which was brutal as I could not make a mistake!).
3. The boys in the Day family do that already... as do some overcrowded prisons.
4. Most people call it "breakdancing", but "b-boying" and "breaking" are the terms preferred by pioneers and practitioners.
5. Click here if you don't know about Amar's "paintography" yet.

I loved reading about the Haider Family. Great Pictures. I hope that the Haiders can manage. How about sending the Teen off to University?

Good idea. While I certainly don't mind having free tuition in real life (Hey, I'm a university student: why would I say no to free education?!), I set up my game to have a sort of class division, which I referenced in my post about the Haiders. I feel like making university an expensive solution to pay for would be better suited for storytelling in my neighbourhood, since families like the Haiders have low hopes because of the fact that opportunities are either too expensive or just out of their reach. A university education would most definitely be the former, but Alex's grades are pretty crap, so the latter would also apply (in real life, at least). A Sim who has low hopes, no opportunities, and very little money will probably be stuck working for the rest of their lives.

oh all of my sims have -A or higher by the time they are old enough to go, since I have a Mod that pushes them to do their homework every night, it helps a lot. Also I make them have some skills, so they all have some scholarships and I make everyone do well in Uni while they are there. I work on them a lot and at the University I don't have a Mod to make them do their homework, I just make them do it myself.

The Walkers
My summer job is now over, and so is my summer break. Now it's back to school, and things are as busy as ever. But at least I'm home, and it's easier for me to do these things when I'm at home. So, without further ado, let us get back to updating this thread with:
The Walker Family
Quote:
After the untimely death of Mitchell's wife, Mitchell and his son moved to SimVille in the hopes that Mitchell's new job will help him forget about his unfortunate past. |
The Walker clan was initially a young, happy family consisting of Mitchell, his wife, and their son Mike. Initially, Mitchell was a stay-at-home writer, writing novels mostly in the adventure and spiritual genres, although he had his successful ventures writing comedic pieces as well. After Mitchell's wife died, however, Mitchell realized that he couldn't get a steady income writing novels and that he needed a day job. That day job was a job at Landgraab County's Times, the largest morning newspaper in Landgraab County (And also the one with "the most boringest name", as Dan Newbie remarks). The paper's offices are located not too far from SimVille, so the Walkers moved there.
And so, their story continues...
The Sims
Mitchell Walker
Quote:
Mitchell is a very talented writer. He enjoys reading and writing, though he likes to game every once in a while too. |
Mitchell loves to write. Ever since he was a kid, he enjoyed putting pen to paper and writing whatever came to his mind... and getting in trouble for writing his own stuff instead of doing classwork like he was supposed to. Nevertheless, his teachers took notice, and he brought home no shortage of spelling bee awards. At the age of twelve he wrote his first novel, and when he was sixteen, his teacher gave the class a story writing assignment, in which the winner would be referred to a real book publisher! Mitchell took that opportunity, and before he knew it, he was making a tidy sum from royalties. He graduated from university, got married, and had a son. His writing style evolved as he aged, though they all still had the charm his readers were hooked onto, and the awards and reviews kept flowing in. However, the money he got from writing was variable, and at best could only supplement the family's income, so Mitchell's wife got a regular job while Mitchell wrote to his heart's content.
Now that Mitchell's a widower, though, he's stuck working in an office away from home, pounding away at his keyboard for things other than what his imagination desires.
While Mitchell is working full-time at his obituary writer job, it's not all gloom. For one, he does have time after work to do other things, like play video games (Yes, adults can play video games too!). He also writes in his spare time, so it's not like he's given up on creative writing completely. It does mean that novels come out at a much slower pace than when he was younger, and he does find it more difficult to overcome writer's block when he's dead exhausted from a day of work. But while Mitchell is passionate about writing, journalism—that is, finding the truth at all costs—isn't really his thing. Mitchell certainly has heard about journalists in other parts of the world who are persecuted for trying to reveal truth and reality in places where corruption runs free and the media is strictly censored and filtered, and Mitchell isn't really into that sort of thing. He would much rather settle in at home with a cup of coffee and write stories about whatever happened upon his mind that day. Has it ever occurred to Mitchell that sometimes suffering sows the seeds for a great story? And does he write to proclaim a message, or just for the money?
Mike Walker
Quote:
Mike is all about having fun. If he's not doing something that amuses him, it's probably not worth doing in the first place. |
Mike is no spring chicken to goofing around. He particularly likes to have (harmless) fun in class, though in a much more "civil" and "agreeable" manner than Bradley Day (At least when his teachers juxtapose the two with each other). He likes to poke and prod people, but seldom beyond their breaking point, and never if they disapprove. He throws paper balls and leaves sticky tack on doorknobs (Telling people it's chewing gum), but generally cleans up after he's done, or after he's told to. And if someone ever bursts into tears after being on the receiving end of one of his antics, he knows he has to apologize and set things straight.
Of course, friends, teachers, and classmates need not be around for Mike to act silly, like him doing a silly dance on the roof of his apartment.
Mike was once an A+ student, but his grades have fallen slightly. Mitchell attributes it to his goofing around and tells him to "stop acting like a dolt all the time." What Mitchell doesn't notice, however, is that the drop in grades occurred after his wife's death. Like Bradley Day, there's clearly a deeper reason as to why Mike's the way he currently is. Mitchell is a writer, and writers tend to ask lots of questions,[1] but he rarely ever probes into the affairs of his son. Has he stopped and asked himself questions about his own son? Writing a diary or journal seldom produces any money, but maybe it's time Mitchell got serious about what's going on deep inside Mike's head and started putting down on paper more about his only child. Mike has no siblings,[2] unlike Bradley, so his father's the only person close enough to him that he can confide his secrets to. That is, if Mike ever feels comfortable doing so.
The House
The Walkers live in Council Flats, a modified version of the Council Flats download on MTS. These British style flats are rather small, but they're comfortable and effective, and they offer a nice balcony. I modified the lot to add a rooftop communal area and added spiral staircases as an alternative to taking the elevator.[3]
The Walkers live on the second floor, across from the Picasos. They have a small room that serves as their kitchen/living room combo, as well as two bedrooms and a bathroom. The balcony has a dining table, an easel, a punching bag, and a trash chute (No need to go out to the curb to dispose of waste!).
The communal area is accessible only via stairs. Good thing Sims in this game don't have accessibility issues! There are some chess tables, a grill, a mini fridge, some tables and chairs, a stereo, a basketball net, and some monkey bars. It's actually pretty nice up here.
A brief glimpse of life in the Walker family
6am wakeup is the norm here.
After Mitchell's wife's death, Mitchell has had to hone his cooking skills, which sure satisfies the Knowledge aspiration in him. Today he's had enough of the cereal and makes some omelettes instead.
The Walkers have their dining table out on the balcony; their flat simply doesn't have room for an indoor dining table if they also want a couch and a TV. Fortunately, SimVille has a very warm, almost tropical climate year-round, and their balcony is located under a roof, so it's usually okay, even during thunderstorms.
Mike's off to school at 8am. The Walkers live on SimVille Street, right at the first Mohawk Crescent intersection just east of the bridge, and there are a lot of shops, apartments, and traffic nearby. Mike has to be ready to get on the bus when it arrives, because it's not going to like holding up the entire town forever.
Mitchell's shift starts at 11am, so he has some time to himself at home. He doesn't really feel like writing today, though, so he plops down on the sofa and watches a movie instead.
Oh, look who's here! Miss Beth Love, how was your "date" with Cody Day?!?!
After that, Mitchell's off to work writing really nice things about dead Sims he has never met before. Fun. Mitchell really misses the old days...
Mike gets home at 3pm. He brought home the two Kovax brothers with him: Joey and Tim. Mike gets along well with his peers and shares their love for sports, so they head up to the basketball court and take turns shooting hoops.
At 5pm, Mitchell gets home. While he's not a complete introvert, he's not the most sociable person either. He does, however, find great joy in frequenting online chatrooms.
Mitchell's culinary skills really get put to the test in the evenings. Joey and Tim are staying over for dinner (Angela and Jones are a lot laxer with them than most other parents in the hood) so he has to worry about what other people might think about his cooking! Today he made chili con carne...
Success!
I actually realized how rarely I have Sims over at other people's houses for meals.
After Joey and Tim leave for home, Mike jumps up and down on the couch...
...then, after his dad scolds him, he jumps on his bed...
...until finally he's too tired and decides to go obediently to sleep.
Mitchell's trying to overcome writer's block. Trying.
Maybe Mitchell's just in dire need of a pillow to lay his head on. He concludes the day, having written zero new lines in his book. No ETA on when it'll be finished.
Conclusion
It's not easy being a single parent, that's for sure. Mitchell misses the good 'ol days of the past, but alas, mourning his loss isn't going to help him now. Mitchell has bounced back reasonably well after his wife's passing, but he needs to pay more attention to Mike if he wants to understand why his grades are curving downward. As for Mike, he has to learn to keep a tighter lid on his mischief, but I'm sure he'll grow out of it eventually. After all, mischief seems almost licit when you're an adult.
Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for more!

Notes
1. According to Roald Dahl's The Hitchhiker: "The trouble is, I'm a writer, and most writers are terribly nosy."
2. In fact, he's the only child Sim I made in this neighbourhood that does not have any siblings.
3. Also for fire safety. I mean, those "Do not use elevator during fire" signs aren't joking when they say, "Do not use elevator during fire".

What a great exposition on the Walkers! I like how you showed Mitch at his office job in your pictures and his struggle with writer's block and how he goes about dealing with it. It's a shame Mike's grades are going down. Maybe Mitch can meet a new love online? I did in real life lol! I do hope if it comes to that you show us his date with the lucky online person

I like the Walkers, it has a good story line. Good pictures. I never seem to do any pics of my sims preparing food, I just forget. I also think that Mitch could meet a new love online and I met mine in real life too.

The Jocks
A few years ago, when I was picking up on The Sims 2 and really enjoying the game (And having far more time to play it), I had a rather strange obsession with sports enthusiasts, known informally in North America as "jocks". Picture a bunch of dudes and dudettes all being masters of basketball, soccer, wrestling, cycling, and what have you, and being able to keep the gears turning for hours on end. I wasn't actually so big on doing those things myself (I'm more of a casual fitness guy, not so much into sports), so creating such characters in The Sims seemed like a great way to vent out my desires to work out into a video game while enjoying the comfort of my rolling chair at home. Thus, I created a family quite appropriately titled the "Jocks".[1]My old, naïve self wasn't big on storylines, so like many other families created at the time, they seemed more like objects than actual characters with a story behind them to me. As time went on, however, and as I became more and more mature, I started coming up with stories based on the Sims' personalities and current situations, which you now get to read and enjoy in this forum thread (And in the fanon pages I'm writing on The Sims Wiki, which you should check out). And the Jocks family was one of those families that finally received some depth, something under the surface. No longer will I create icebergs that have nothing below the waterline!
The Jocks Family
Quote:
Harold and Lisa feel privileged to raise two young boys, and hope that they'll take up sports and fitness. Jason is happy to comply, but is Toby's quest for lust too much of a distraction? |
Yes, I would never have thought about my sports-and-fitness-obsessed family being sown the seeds of a Don Lothario story, but I was sick of playing with figureheads where nothing special or problematic happened, so I decided to add some spice to my game, and when creating SimVille and recreating many of the Sims that had lived in neighbourhoods past, it felt great to be able to give this family something more than just appearances.
Anyways, the story goes: Harold and Lisa are passionate about sports, fitness, and other physically demanding activities, and feel privileged that they were able to bring two young'uns into the world. They immediately started training them up physically, hoping that one day they would take up sports and fitness later in life. While Jason, the younger son, is more than happy to join the school basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and wrestling teams simultaneously (With mom and dad cheering and hollering from the bleachers, of course), Toby isn't on par with the idea. For Toby, hooking up with the hot chicks in town is what really tickles his fancy. His parents do not approve of his lust-loving aspiration, especially when Toby's far more interested in soaking up in a hot tub than being out on the court or in the gym.
The Jocks are one of my oldest families, and they've always had the same theme: highly active parents with highly active kids. While they lived in a sizably comfortable detached lot with swimming pools, basketball courts, soccer fields, and even a military obstacle course in previous neighbourhoods, they now live in an apartment... which actually isn't so bad. They are now really truly urban Sims, and now that I have gotten rid of the suburban vibe, I seem to view them with a more favourable gaze.
The Sims
Harold Jocks
Quote:
Harold believes that sports should be physically intensive and sweaty. Thus, he finds it silly that some consider golf and auto racing to be sports. |
Harold has loved sports since he was a kid. Though he did join the school soccer and volleyball teams, he has always found it more enjoyable to play for fun rather than for points. He'd spend a lot of time practicing and honing his skills, but would be jovial and playful on the field, not caring if he won or lost, only that he was dirty and sweaty and happy enough to go home in all smiles. Harold then landed an office job after college, which ate away at his morale as deadlines and paperwork piled up, leaving him little to no time to do the things he really loved doing: playing sports. So he quit and got a job in the athletic career instead. His body is out of shape and the enthusiasm in him has waned a little, but he's confident that he'll be able to restore the glory that was his childhood in his mid-40s.
Harold is working on retraining his body, and it just so perfectly happens that young Jason is in his most malleable stage of life. Father and son have the opportunity to train together, which Harold feels is helping Jason a lot more than if he just coached him like a drill instructor. Jason gets to see that even dad has room for improvement, and not having a parent admit that they're perfect in turns entices him to believe that he's not perfect as well, and so he accepts failure more readily than a hardcore perfectionist. Harold is pleased that he didn't make the same mistake with Jason that he did with Toby, whom we'll talk about in a bit.
Lisa Jocks
Quote:
Lisa wants to retire on a fishing boat someday. She takes delight in reeling in boatloads of fish all on her own. |
Lisa isn't as into sports as Harold is, but she openly encourages it, and there's another thing tucked under her belt that sports players tend to love as well: fitness. Lisa made good use of her weight room club membership in high school, and even started a few fitness clubs of her own. While Harold played for fun, Lisa played for the friends and connections. Seen as a supportive and focused fitness enthusiast, many students looked up to her as a role model as she stayed faithful to her commitments, always going to the gym and to her clubs even when homework and exams knocked at her doors. Like Harold, though, it all fell apart when she reached true adulthood, and the stress of work finally took her down. She quit her old job as a secretary and moved into the Oceanography career. Lisa loves the water, loves the ocean, and loves swimming, and her new job involves a healthy mixture of all three. Recently she's also been taking up yoga, and hopes to start a yoga club of her own someday (And to relive some fond high school memories!).
It helps too that Lisa's also into physical training, so she, Harold, and Jason get to train together. While most parents in SimNation would rather just send their kids off to basketball camp and not have to leave the comfort of their overstuffed armchair, Harold and Lisa call training time family time. That is, if Toby would join in...
Toby Jocks
Quote:
Toby's parents had hoped he would pursue a career in sports or adventuring, but Toby's far too distracted with lust. |
Despite what you might expect, Toby isn't actually a lard or anything. He's active and interested in fitness, and he does go to the gym on a regular basis. But building strength and endurance and staying physically and mentally healthy isn't high on Toby's agenda. Toby works out and "listens" to his parents for one reason: to look good for the girls at school.
Toby once tried out for the school basketball team, but the coaches rejected him as he was "far too distracted with the audience" that came to spectate. The audience, of course, included some "super HAWT" girls that Toby managed to impress. Unfortunately, he didn't impress the people that really mattered at that moment, so he came home to a disappointed mom and dad, who were not pleased to hear that Toby failed to make the team because of his "stubbornness to attraction". "Focus on your schooling and your sports," Harold told him. "Dating should come after that." But Toby wouldn't listen! All throughout middle school, Toby toyed with the whole "Let's date and have WooHoo" idea that young adolescents buy into as a normal part of growing up. While most Sims tend to grow up and mature out of it, Toby was sold on the idea of having as many loves as possible. Toby had flirted with many of the girls at school, but only one had managed to come far enough to be his first date: Carly Firebaum, who is interestingly enough also a Romance Sim!
Jason Jocks
Quote:
Jason wants to be both a professional basketball player and a soccer player when he grows up. He dreams of being a benevolent celebrity one day. |
(Not) following in his older brother's footsteps is Jason Jocks. Not only is he too young to love (in *that* sense), but he's actually into sports and fitness like his parents had hoped. He likes to take dips in the apartment swimming pool, and he makes good use of the rooftop basketball court and soccer net. Whenever mom and dad are around and available, they're training together, and Jason loves it. In short, Jason's the "perfect" child that Harold and Lisa wanted.
While Jason's following in his parents's dreams, he also has another favourite of his own: music and dance. Jason's clearly been influenced by the Newbies, and he sometimes likes listening to the music on the stereo more than he does actually exercising or playing. Still, his parents seem to have no trouble with him turning up the volume a wee bit higher than normal, so long as he's actually training.
As far as personality goes, Jason's the nicest person in his family; he generally doesn't like to get on people's nerves, and his "soft" side tends to come out a lot at school. Unlike stereotypical "aggressive football coach" parents, Harold and Lisa are quite pleased to hear that their youngest son's actually caring about people, further shunning Toby towards the sidelines.
The House
The Jocks live on the ground floor of the Teleprompter Apartments, which is the only apartment lot in the neighbourhood that I built entirely myself.[2] It's a pretty large apartment lot with lots of amenities in the communal areas, and was intended for Sims who were making good money, wanting the comforts of life close by while still being affordable. However, most of the apartment's tenants are large families with lots of children. The Newsons and the Ottomas families all live on this apartment lot, and it can get noisy and packed. The Jocks are a simple family of four, though, so they live quite comfortably here.
All apartments in the building more or less look the same and pretty much cost the same to rent. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are all part of the same room. There are two bedrooms and a bathroom, all of which are connected via doors. Having only one bathroom can kinda suck, as is having the other bedroom being just an unlocked door away from yours. Let's hope your family gets along with each other.
The apartment mailbox is located indoors, so no need to go outside in the rain to pay the bills. Of course, this also means that walkbys will walk inside the apartment in order to do their lip flaps and stuff.
There are two vending machines and two elevators that lead up to the upper floors.
There are two stairwells as well, for those who don't want to buy a StairMaster. One on the south side of the building...
...and the other on the north side.
The ground floor is also home to a nice playground...
...a large public bathroom with showers and changing booths...
...and a spacious swimming pool with a diving board and a slide.[3]
The second floor has a store[4] that sells, among other things, groceries! Now you can easily restock your fridge even if Hurricane Irma is raging outside!
The communal area here also has an education career bookcase, available at no additional charge. Some vending machines and couches help facilitate the development of knowledge.
The third floor has no apartments, but is a spacious communal floor with a restaurant...[4]
...pool tables and dartboards...
...a gym...
...and a basketball and soccer net.
To make things even better, this building includes an array of solar panels on the roof, which greatly cut down on the bills the tenants have to pay. With SimVille receiving no shortage of sunshine year-round, a better question would be: Why aren't solar panels on more buildings around here?!?!
A brief glimpse of life in the Walker family
5am riiiiise and shiiiiine!
Harold and Lisa go out for early morning jogs. Mornings in SimVille can be a bit cool, but a good run warms them up.
Jason goes for a dip in the pool.
And Toby... er, Toby?
Hmm, guess he's still asleep. Very well!
Harold and Lisa get back and they prepare some breakfast for the family.
So Toby gets up at 5:45. Okay, fair enough; can't really call him a sleepyhead for that.
The Jocks have a neat point deficiency, though not as serious as the Urbans. Still, mealtimes are productive, albeit messy. Good thing Sims don't have to wipe tables!
Everyone currently starts work/school at 9AM, which means at 8AM they all pretty much leave at the same time. Jason gets on the school bus first:
Harold and Lisa share the same carpool.
Toby just casually strolls out, taking his time. He boards the bus in a very nonchalant way.
A Mr. Eric Rodriguez is the landlord for this lot, not Beth Love. He drops in at 9am to maintain the grounds.
1pm rolls around, and high school lets out for the day. Toby doesn't get off at his stop, though; he's going somewhere else after school. Probably found another cheerleader to hook up with. We're instead going to focus on Harold and Jason, who both get home at 3pm. Father and son make good use of the sports opportunities on the roof of their apartment.
Lisa gets home at 4pm. Looks like she got promoted to Dive Master today!
The trio train together, like they normally do. It's their idea of "family time", and it bonds just as well as playing a nice board game together.
It's a warm SimVille evening today, perfect for going out![5] The three head out for an evening jog together.
Still no Toby when they get back. The Jocks make dinner in his absence.
There's Toby! He comes home solo, but it seems likely that he went out with, uh, "friends" today. Gee, I wonder who they are. Toby doesn't talk about it; he just slips into his usual spot at the table. 'Least he's not late for dinner.
All Day I Dream About Sports...
Early bedtimes are important for someone like Jason. And a full day of activity means that there's no "I'm not tired!" whining, because Jason's definitely tired.
Harold and Lisa cool off with a few games of chess.
They retire to the hay early as well.
Toby's more of a night owl, but he has nowhere to go at this time of night; his dad knows when he's been out ballin' during the wee hours when Toby's too groggy and tired to wake up before 6. 5:45's already a hard enough target to accomplish. Tonight he spends a quiet evening in the gym, which is almost always empty at this time of day.
Lemon-lime soda goes down refreshingly well after a fine workout.
Midnight is his average bedtime, but hey, it could've been a lot worse.
Conclusion
If you get past the whole spiel about stereotypes, you'll see that the Jocks are like any other family, with their own set of problems. Harold and Lisa look favourably upon their youngest son, while they seem very much disconnected with Toby. Are they concerned with such a frosty relationship, or have they pretty much just given up on Toby and let him loose? As for Jason, he seems like the "perfect" child, but he has his own flaws as well: his constant pursuit to please his parents and to do well in sports and fitness leaves him little time for other pursuits. The whole family is messy and their apartment–especially their bathroom–is always dirty. There may be worse families out there, yes, but the Jocks have some serious cleaning up to do, not just in terms of the filthy shower-tub and toilet, but also with their relationships with each other.
Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for more!

1. This has nothing to do with the fanon, but in my eleventh grade history class we played a fun game that stretched the course of a week or two where we played the citizens of France during the French Revolution, and we were allowed to pick our character's names. In the past, someone named their character "Jacques Strap", and the joke went over my teacher's head... until she had to call on his name. Since then there were a couple more Jacques Straps and their reincarnations. Just a funny memory that came up while I was writing this.
2. Wanna build your own custom apartment from the ground up? See this page.
3. The green edges around the round pool edges seem to be caused by my Intel graphics card on my laptop. I know about all the "stories" about Intel not playing nice with The Sims 2, but this is pretty much the only issue I've seen with these graphics cards and the game so far. I'm still not exactly sure what causes this bug; it didn't occur on my old XP computer which had an AMD Radeon card, and I used the Graphics Rules Maker to get the game to recognize my newer hardware. Though it annoys me, at least the rest of the game is playable, so I just try not to use rounded edges in pools anymore.
4. The Apartments and Shopping, on the same Lot! mod is needed for things like stores and restaurants in the communal areas of apartments to be functional.
5. Summer evenings are my favourite time to go jogging. It's also nice sitting out on my porch with my laptop, but the mosquitoes can get pretty vicious if you're just sitting there.

I really like your Robot Painting thing. I love to have my Sims paint custom images and now I can have them do paintings of Sims with Still Life, I will try it soon.

SimVille Corner Stop
I mentioned the SimVille Corner Stop in my post about Serge Barb, and while most people probably got a good idea of what the lot does (It's a very small lot!), I think I'll go into some more depth about this dinky little lot, which shouldn't take too long to cover.
Quote:
Leaving SimVille? Or just arrived? Either way, you should drop by to pick up some goodies! Open 24/7! |
At the intersection between SimVille Street and Mohawk Crescent sits the SimVille Corner Stop, a small store that once marked the edge of SimVille. Those who entered and exited the town were greeted by its presence, offering chips, sodas, and a bathroom break before or after long car rides. SimVille has since expanded beyond the New Guinea Bridge, although the store's legacy still lives on. Its proximity to several apartment buildings has also made it more of a place where the locals would hang out. It's pretty much a gas station... sans the gas.
Exterior
An architect once gave the store the "Ugliest Building in SimVille" award, and he wasn't being nice. SimVille Corner Stop makes any elaborate home designer want to go hari kari with its "Spartan but effective" design, with many likening the storefront windows to be a "cheap, pathetic, ad hoc way of trying to make the place look nice." A tourist once called it the "glass box prison", while others have said that it made convenience stores look like a "place where ne'er-do-wells hang out."
Pretty design was never on the builder's mind, however, for the store was built to stock all the necessary things of life, conveniently located under one roof. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and was mostly intended for visitors and the odd passerby. However, it has recently been more of a place for the locals, and as such, there is a seating area with an espresso bar on the Mohawk Crescent side of the lot.
There's a bus stop just west of the lot. A fair number of visitors take the bus to SimVille from Numenor Region Station, a good 4 km east of SimVille, so the corner stop happily provides the necessities for those Sims before they take off and explore the rest of SimVille. The fact that it's open 24/7 is a nice bonus for the bus drivers too, who can slip in and pick up a coffee at 3am.
Interior
There is nothing fancy about the interior of the store; just two rooms in the "Spartan but effective" design scheme.
If you walk in from the Mohawk Crescent side, you'll be greeted with a few freezers selling frozen groceries, some clothing racks, a changing booth, and a pay phone. There isn't any "fresh produce" to be found here, so you'll want a proper grocery store for that. However, if you live off frozen pizzas and TV dinners, SimVille Corner Stop has you covered.
There are two arcade machines on the other side. The travelling family has something to keep the kids amused with while the parents buy some much needed supplies.
Turn around and you'll find two vending machines and an overhead TV. The TV's supposed to be tuned into the 24/7 news channel all the time, but townies frequently watch movies on it. Annoying. Since that was not the TV's intended purpose, however, there are no chairs or sofas, so if you wanna watch a two hour movie, you'll spend all two hours on your two feet. Your fault!
Next to the TV is the counter with the cash register. Pet collars, video games, and cologne are sold here.
There's even a pinball machine.
Across from the counters is a newspaper rack and a magazine stand.
A little further down is the photo booth and cell phone kiosk.
The public bathrooms are nothing spectacular, but if you desperately need to go, you'll take anything.
All your basic shopping needs under one roof, how nice!
Conclusion
There's not much to this humble little lot, which was the whole point of the corner stop. There's nothing particularly fancy about it, only that it stocks the necessary essentials for most Sims to get by on, available around the clock. Those who demand an extravagant shopping experience should probably turn their attention to the much-nicer shops just down SimVille Street and avoid the corner stop like the plague. However, for the majority of Sims that just need some basic supplies, for the exhausted tourist or bus driver looking for a bag of chips and a toilet to use, or for the odd Sim that does their shopping at a quarter past three in the morning, SimVille Corner Stop has all they need, with only some of the extras.

I like the little SimVille Corner Stop store. It makes a very good Convience Store like a Circle K or a 7-11, etc.
Where did you get the vending machines? I think they are very nice.

The Patzers
What is it with men in this town?! They're either big slobs, really lazy, distastefully lustful, or all of the above! But here we are about to tell the tale of a man who is neither of the three...Wait. Hrm. Okay, nevermind. We will cover those Sims another time. For now, here's (yet) another Sim who is not particularly fond of work, and more about treating life as if it were one big coffee shop.
The Patzer Family
Quote:
Patzer, sick of the so-called "Suburban Goodness", has moved to a place which he hopefully finds more suitable to his urban liking. |
The Patzer family consists of only one Sim, and though he shares his name with that darned Cody Day, the two have some differences. For one, Cody Patzer has no children, and he's extra careful not to fall into the pit Cody Day found himself in. Cody Patzer also fancies sitting in a coffee shop with his laptop, gorging on free WiFi and greeting any friends that come in, but he's not that into dating or anything. Cody Day, on the other hand, is more of a one-night stand guy. Cody Patzer grew up in the suburbs, and he eventually grew to hate life up there; he moved to a town where everything was close by and within walking distance or a short bus ride away. Cody Day spent his entire life in the city, but he thinks the suburbs might not be a bad place to live (It would, however, make things much harder for his five illegitimate sons).
Anyways, without further ado, let's jump right into...
The Sims
Cody Patzer
Quote:
Cody just wants a chill, laid back life hanging out with friends. He's not all that interested in doing anything particularly out of the ordinary. |
Cody Patzer is an only child. He's unmarried because he's disinterested in having to deal with sharing his apartment with a spouse. He dresses in simple clothes because he hates how it takes so long to put formalwear on. He cleans his place, but he's fine with leaving some messes around here and there. He has a job, but he's not rich, nor is he interested in working to get rich. He has friends, but he doesn't like having them over; he prefers outings at a community lot instead.
Cody Patzer seems like a mixed bag at first, but in reality, he's pretty chill. Maybe a little too chill...
Cody works as a Coffee Shop Sound Engineer in the Music career, but he has no interest in advancing up the career ladder. For one, he gets to work at his favourite coffee shop and not have to stand behind the counter sweating and taking orders. He also gets access to all of the songs on Simify,[1] ad-free and with unlimited access. When he's done fiddling with the controls, he can play games on his laptop. And on top of all that, he gets free coffee and donuts! Not a bad job. A promotion to Summer Camp Music Teacher would mean more money, but it would also mean losing those benefits, and he does not want to spend a full day dealing with kids!
Personality-wise, Cody's an Aquarius, and is fairly balanced in most respects. His 6 outgoing and playful points make him popular amongst friends, while his 4 neat and active points ensures that he at least takes somewhat good care of his apartment and his body. Cody's slow to anger, but he hates Serge Barb more than snot. His one body skill point means that Serge almost always kicks his butt, though.
The House
Cody Patzer lives in The Crossroads Apartments, located right in the heart of Old SimVille. It is an unmodified version of the apartment lot of the same name in Belladonna Cove.
Cody lives in the northeastern apartment. He lives quite comfortably in it, and he's able to make the rent, at least. There's a little kitchen, a common room, and a balcony. The balcony's the worst part of the apartment, however: it doesn't face the street, unlike the apartments on the west side of the lot, and he only gets to stare at the front yard of the SimVille Sporting Center. He's not really an exercise freak.
Not too many apartments around here have multiple stories, but The Crossroads Apartment is one of them. On the second floor is Cody's rather spacious bedroom (For one guy, I mean! The Day boys would kill to have this room!), a small bathroom, and a spare bedroom that Cody converted into a small exercise room. Yes, he sometimes does like to work out, but he doesn't push himself very hard. I imagine he just wants to feel the burn a little, maybe keep that belly in check, and that's it.
The communal area's pretty desolate, but there's a grill and a chess table here, at least.
A brief glimpse of life in the Patzer family
Cody's carpool doesn't come until 12pm, so he sleeps through the Sixam wakeup time.
He wakes up at the shockingly late hour of 7 o'clock.
A little cereal will do him good. And some coffee.
Most of his friends are at work in the morning, so he passes the time with some computer games.
At 12pm, his ride comes honking its horn. Cody hops on and works until 8pm.
Coffee shop pastries are not good for dinner. 'Least not in Cody's mind. Immediately after work, Cody heads to a nearby restaurant. Speedy's Fast Lanes Bowling and Eats, anyone?
Cody's in luck tonight. His apartment neighbour Michelle Tse; the owner of Cooke's Place, Julien Cooke; and family chef Angela Kovax are there. They greet him and they dine and bowl together for a bit.
Cody takes a nosedive into the gutter.
Ahh... a chill night. Nothing stressful going on! Cody likes it when things are simple, and tonight he's having a good time. That is, until an unwanted guest shows up...
Serge does not like Michelle's face.
He gives Cody a rough shove.
He splashes water onto Julien's face.
And he starts a fight with Angela Kovax.
His rampage ends short when Angela gets the upper hand.
Shoo you little green grunt!
But alas, the night's already been ruined. Cody's not in the mood to be out of the house anymore thanks to Serge mucking things up. He says goodbye to his friends and heads home. He spends the next few hours mooching around on the computer.
His average bedtime is 2am.
Conclusion
Cody Patzer's life seems rather dull, and in a sense it is. He doesn't think too much about the future, and is more focused on his pleasures in the present. He hasn't saved much money up over the years, and definitely has no intentions on investing it into charity or anything of the like. While there are certainly lazier Sims in this town—Cory Firebaum, to

I like the way you're exploring different levels of affluence and poverty. The families have interesting back stories and the kids are adorable.
I started out playing all perfect families, and have a tendency to slip back into that. They all studied, worked hard on their skills, went to Uni and got straight As. In the offspring challenge I'm playing, I still do quite a lot of that, although ACR has thrown a wrench in some of my plans. In the long-term hood I want to put together, I want to have all kinds of Sims and I plan to use some of your ideas about less well off Sims.

Aw man Serge, why'd ya have to go an be a jerk and ruin a good night out!? Rude! Cody seems to be living an easy-going life. I like single sim households, taking them out with their friends or them going solo out to the gym or park. Not worrying about the hassle of keeping a family entertained and focus on just one. Nice update!

Well done Angela for sorting Serge out!
Poor Cody, sad that he had his night out ruined. I think he could find happiness though- he has an interest in the Paranormal and entertainment, so he could find someone who shares those interests and forge a closer relationship. He's already on his way to his LTW at level 3 in his career.

Now that I have a little more time, I went back to read more carefully about the families.
This is so true. An unbalanced focus on anything brings a form of poverty.
I love the Walkers and their story. There's so much that could happen with Mitchell and Mike, so much that could go right or wrong depending on (mostly) Mitchell's decisions.
That's a great picture of Harold Jocks through the soccer net. Poor Toby, His parents are really expecting him to be something he isn't. I wonder if his parents will come to understand that he's really a typical (if there really is such a thing) teenager, full of hormones and trying to discover what he really wants in life. Hopefully, he will outgrow the shallowness of his current thinking and aspire to something a bit deeper as he grows older. His brother runs the risk of never knowing what it is he really wants, and living an active but strangely unfulfilling life.
I like the Corner Stop, and will probably steal the idea at some point.
Serge! He deserves to get his behind kicked by Angela.

A Newbie house party
I'm currently working on another post about another family, which I hope to have ready in the next few days (Hopefully!). I apologize for the lack of updates to this thread as I've been busy with school, and in fact still have exams ahead of me as I write this. However, with final exams comes a little break period from classes to allow for studying, and "studying" I have been doing... ahem. For now, though, I'll fill you in on something I mentioned in my post about the Newbies: "Every Saturday, the Newbies hold a party at their house and invite random neighbours to mix and mingle with each other." Well, when I loaded the Newbie family house for the first time in weeks I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had saved the game at 2am Saturday morning, so it was time to prepare for the weekly Newbie house party! Of course, because having lots of Sims over results in lag-a-mania, I invited just two families over (My game has it capped at 11 guests) to join in and get to know each other. The weekly Newbie house party has traditionally been a time for other Sims in the neighbourhood to be able to meet and greet one another, so I've typically always made every guest selectable using cheats and making sure they knew every other guest at the party before it ended. And of course, don't forget my arsenal of hacked objects that can extend the party timer and the 'setHour' cheat to roll the clock back! Except this time I found that... boring. Normally I'm a control freak and want my Sims to obey my every bidding, and when I'm trying to do something, then that is important. But after getting all the guests to greet each other, I decided to let loose and let the Sims have a real party, for once: I turned free will on and deselected all of the guests!
...Honestly, parties became fun for me again! It's a real party now that I'm not keeping my Sims on a chain anymore and just letting them mess up the place! Sure, I was giving commands here and there, but letting Sims do their own thing is something a good Sim photographer* should do, since that's when the most interesting photo opportunities occur.
Anyways, here's what happened one fine Saturday morning at the Newbie's lofty loft:
A whole bunch of memories. Er, images.
The guest list: all the Urbans and all the Days! Yes, even Cody was invited. Amar's the host, and he's friends with all but two of the invited guests. But seriously, who could refuse a party invitation from the great Amar?!?!
Making ten additional guests selectable might not have been such a good idea...
A few seconds after I gave everyone back their free will, this happened.
Another pic.
Another angle.
I set up a buffet table to feed the hungry guests. Christian took a plate.
Taylor made use of the easel.
Jared and Tommy are (shockingly) eating their vegetables.
Johnny and Suzie got into a musical mood.
Jaden and Bradley played together on the pinball machine.
Ethan, Christian, and the Urban twins went for a spin on the centrifun.
Oscar and Roland played pool with Cody. Cody didn't seem too thrilled being beaten by a robot.
Justin and Evan disappeared under a cloud of feathers.
Kitchen conversations.
Alec the Bigfoot didn't seem that interested in the party...
Neither did Oreo, who mostly stayed inside the master bedroom.
Amar played the drums, sans the tip jar.
All those outgoing points wasn't enough to stop Julius from blogging about cuisine...
Later in the afternoon, Amar got out the DJ booth, as is tradition during Saturday parties.
I think they had too much fruit punch.
Soon there's a crowd!
Justin and Evan were more interested in playing cops and robbers amidst all the dancers.
I was surprised to see Jared and Tommy... not having fun?
Alec had some chef salad on his own on the patio.
Cody had some cold turkey solo as well.
Cody later joins in on the dancing.
<insert witty caption here>
The Newbies are great at throwing great parties.
The results of Taylor's toils. It was still unfinished.
The dishwasher somehow broke, so Julius had to repair it.
The place was a mess! Parties are just messy events, aren't they? Good thing we have an army of Servos to clean everything up!
----
Hope you enjoyed! Stay tuned for the next post!

I'm a control freak when it comes to my Sims as well and I do tend to have them obey my every bidding, one reason I don’t play with ACR is that I want to control their actions most of the time. So I understand your playing style. I am glad that you decided to let loose and let the Sims have a real party, for once, as that is how I do my parties and I do a lot of them.
It can get crazy if you try to have that many Sims selectable wow. You did say that you undid some of that yes?
Great update and I loved your pictures of the Party.
Wow you have more Servos than I do. Of course all of mine look like Human Sims though.

The Francos
I have been very busy this past month with midterms and assignments and stuff. I once again find myself approaching the same situation I had in April where final exams suddenly leave me lots of time. I know I should be using that time to study, but I've left this thread dormant for a bit too long, longer than my liking. As such, I have decided to take some time to resurrect this thread with:The Franco Family
Quote:
The Francos have recently earned enough money to move from their old roots to SimVille, looking for an opportunity to start anew. Will they be able to make it, or will poverty strike them down again? |
It's never easy being an immigrant, and the Francos are no exception. Rising costs of living, rampant gentrification, stereotypical attitudes towards the poor, and a drastic reduction in opportunities for both young and old alike have led many families in SimNation's lower class to head west, looking for better opportunities. SimVille, located near the southwest corner of SimNation, was generally insulated from this influx by the various towns and cities further east. But west is best, and so determined families have pressed on, sacrificing whatever money and possessions they've had looking for somewhere to call home. Unfortunately, while opportunities were plentiful, the sharp class division that has plagued SimNation society and culture has resulted in many of them being hastily closed as the middle and upper class feared losing their job opportunities and their "clean" neighbourhoods from all these "impoverished dirtbags", as a politician once put it (Unsurprisingly, he was unpopular with the lower class). Will SimVille play kindly with these newcomers, or will it chew and spit them out of existence?
The Sims
Israel Franco
Quote:
Israel's willing to work hard, but his alcohol addiction has held him back for years. Though he is recovering, he's still suffering from the effects. |
Contrary to popular belief, not all alcoholics are lazy and apathetic. Many of them indeed work long, hard hours, being the breadwinners of the family. But these people may still have internal problems and struggles, and for some, alcohol is one of the things they turn to for support, for comfort, for relief from such pain. For Israel, that struggle came from a time when he was working paycheque-to-paycheque, phone ringing off the hook (At least before it got disconnected) and the landlord always pounding at his door yelling at him to pay his rent using money he didn't have. He was getting no support from friends and family, and some of them even chastised him, saying "You should be independent by now. The only reason why you're not is because you're lazy." Israel grew up in a workaholic family, and when he couldn't meet up to his parents's expectations, he felt left out and rejected.
So Israel turned to alcohol for support. He was still a heavy drinker when he married Stephanie and had three kids. Fortunately for Israel, an NGO found him and offered him counselling and recovery sessions gratis. While he's been able to part with the alcoholic drinks, and his relationship with his wife and children are starting to heal, the effects of alcoholism may be here to stay for a very long time.
Israel is currently looking for work, and he's getting desperate. There aren't an awful lot of job offerings in SimVille these days, and the middle class are wary of their positions being usurped by lower class workers. If he doesn't find a job soon, though, next stop's going to be living on the streets!
Stephanie Franco
Quote:
Stephanie wanted to be an astronaut when she was a child, but poverty robbed her of her dream. She still makes paper spaceships in her spare time. |
Like the Haiders, Stephanie's on the part of the hierarchy where if you have dreams, you may as well forget about them. There were virtually no social assistance programs to help the poor when she was growing up, and while support systems are slowly being developed in the modern era, the assistance she receives is still paltry and relatively unhelpful. Stephanie fears for the future of her children: will they be able to pursue their dreams or will they remain stuck in the buttocks of SimNation, forever condemned to the ranks of the proletariat?
Stephanie is also looking for work, and like Israel, she works hard (To little avail; SimNation execs are notorious for not noticing employees in the lower ranks of their organizations) and wants to support her family. The fact that they were able to leave their old home–where things were much worse–is a plus, but they're not having an awful lot of luck here in SimVille either. Maybe that will change, though. While there are indeed a lot of sour grapes in SimVille, there are also kind souls that genuinely care about other people too. Will the Francos receive the compassion they need?
Juan Franco
Quote:
Juan's been getting into a lot of trouble recently, with bad influences knocking on his doorstep. For a change, he does like hip-hop music. |
Juan's never been much of a family boy. From a young age his two parents were rarely at home, both of them working full-time trying to get a steady income flowing into the family. When his two younger sisters were born he was expected to care for them... But with what? There were no toys at home and barely any food in the fridge. At school he's been mingling with the wrong crowd, although it seemed logical at first: help transport (illegal) pharmaceuticals, and he'll be paid in cold hard cash for his efforts. Juan, looking for a way to help his starving family out, started doing just that. His parents were pleasantly surprised at first when all of a sudden there was something to eat every evening... until the police took notice. Juan was under twelve at the time, and in SimNation only Sims twelve and older can be deemed responsible for their actions (and thus can receive a criminal charge). But in that city, it was practically illegal to be poor, and Juan very nearly did time. His parents had no experience with dealing with the law, but they did their best to fight for their son. In the end, the charges (which technically should never have been laid in the first place) were dropped, but the cops never got in trouble for it. While it may have been a one-time incident, and while it might've just been that city where the cops were particularly corrupt, Juan's been distrustful of authority ever since.
For a change, though, he's involved somewhat in SimNation's underground hip hop scene (Like Robby Haider), and recently a large number of Simlish hip hop artists have been using this renewed interest in hip hop to open doors for children and teenagers living in poverty, hoping to use hip hop as a means of keeping them clear of crime. Not all hope is lost for Juan: he may still be scoffed at by society, but there's a growing movement behind him that's determined to end the stigma about the poor. The opportunities Juan never had may be unlocked for his children someday.
Celeste Franco
Quote:
Celeste wants to be a soccer player when she grows up, but will her family's dire financial situation hinder her from reaching her goals? |
Among the ranks of the poor are often talented people who just need an opportunity to sharpen their skills and to let their light and ambitions shine. One notable example is Panyee FC.[1] Celeste spends a lot of time watching soccer on TV, and the nearby FreeTime Recreation Center has a soccer net she can use, but SimNation sports teams–even amateur ones–are notoriously selective. Celeste was rejected from her school soccer team right off the bat before she could even hand in the registration forms due to her grades and her family's financial situation. While SimVille is slightly more tolerant, most schools in Landgraab County don't want lower-class students to tarnish their reputations in academia and sports, meaning that even if a poor student makes the honour roll or performs better than "richer" students, they're kept under wraps–really shut up in a dungeon–and aren't given much recognition, if at all. There is reform movement trying to change all this, but the culture of class discrimination has permeated SimNation society, and it's going to be a difficult habit to break.
Sandra Franco
Quote:
Sandra wants to be a mechanic someday. She dreams of being able to take apart a car's engine and put it back together in working order. |
Blue-collared professions are frequently looked down upon as being dirty, low paying jobs on the East and West Coasts of SimVille. In the interior, the negative stereotypes aren't nearly as profound, and indeed there are many blue-collared workers living in SimVille, but the stigma is starting to build up here. Sandra has a fascination with machines, but so far her interest has been limited to reading books about it. In some parts of SimNation, children have more freedom to do what they want, and some cities and towns even have "real-life playgrounds" where kids can be a firefighter, or a paramedic, or any other profession inside a supervised "city", and would get a glimpse of how the real world works. Unfortunately, SimVille's not one of those cities, and schools here generally don't offer much opportunities to go beyond the four walls of the classroom (In fact, just last year a school came under fire for "cancelling all field trips" due to "safety concerns". There was a protest amongst the parents and the school retracted its decision, but that just shows you how ridiculous attitudes here can be sometimes). For Sandra, it's only at home where her father sometimes brings home some old engine parts for her to toy around with. It's more fun than the plastic rubbish most children are given nowadays. She's friends with Evan Newbie, who invited her behind-the-scenes at Amar's Flowers & Craftables one time. She really wanted to use the toymaking bench there, but the Newbies said she was "too young" to tinker with it.
The house
The Francos live in The Grey Lofts, which I covered in my post about the Haiders.
Their apartment is fairly small, and like the Haiders, the kids wind up sleeping on couches and recliners. However, they also have one less person than the Haiders, so there's at least a little more room.
A brief glimpse of life in the Franco family
Israel's up at 6am to make a simple breakfast.
Like other poor families in SimVille, every little bit of uneaten food is saved for later.
Juan, Celeste, and Sandra all have the day off today, which is great. Unfortunately, the clouds roll over in the morning and dump buckets over SimVille. That doesn't stop Celeste and Sandra from playing in the rain puddles, though.
Israel and Stephanie don't have time to sit around, though. As soon as the morning paper arrives, they're checking to see if there are any job offerings available.
Nope... not today. No vacancies available.
It's a Saturday, so the landlord went ahead and ordered a pizza. The rain has since stopped, making the rooftop available for grilling and eating.
Robby Haider comes out and tunes the stereo to hip hop. Juan just can't help but join in. Shame there's no true hip hop dancing in The Sims 2 (Except maybe breakdancing), but slap dancing works well too, I suppose!
Meanwhile, Israel and Stephanie get into an argument. I'm not too sure what it's about, but it may have something to do with alcohol. Recovering from alcoholism is a slow, steady process, and occasionally Israel slips up. His family is going to have to be patient and understanding about this.
Mingling with the neighbours, apartment communities have more of an opportunity to be closely knit than those living in detached housing.
Juan has befriended Alex, so there's a connection between the two at least.
Dinner proceeds in much the same way that breakfast does.
Moody.
Israel goes off his rocker for a little bit.
It could've been a lot worse, but sleeping on couches and recliners still isn't very comfortable.
Once the parents find a job, their position in the one and only proper bed will be more justifiable.
Conclusion
Before the Francos point fingers at their father, they should all remember that Israel has made tremendous progress over the last few years, and while he may slip up occasionally and come home with several beers in his system, he definitely is not the same alcoholic that he was ten years ago. Juan is understandably shaken from his experiences with authority, but he needs to remember that things are different in SimVille: Landgraab County cops aren't exactly world-class, but they boast one of the lowest corruption rates in the country. And as a whole, the Francos should take some lessons from the nearby Haiders and the Day brothers, who place great importance on family and staying together. The Franco family needs to strengthen its meager bonds with its own members if it wants to be able to make it through. The goal should not be getting rich, but about finding something that even the Newbies–the wealthiest family in SimVille–cannot find.
Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for more!

It looks like everyone had a great time at the party!
I hope Israel Franco finds a job soon, and doesn't relapse. And I hope Juan can stay on the straight and narrow; the cops will probably be watching him all the time, I'm sure, just waiting for him to make a mistake.

I really enjoy your outtakes. Robby actually looks like he's enjoying hanging out in the corridor, maybe daydreaming. Paddy, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be having much fun. Maybe he's worried about being caught.
I much prefer Count Nery Wood to the Maxis name!
