If you’re going after a sort of painted style, posterising won’t help much with that I’m afraid. The best way, obviously, would be to actually paint something yourself .. when you’re trying to convert existing photos or other kinds of artwork, try looking for filters like water colour or somesuch. I’m not familiar with Gimp myself, but a two second Google search yields e.g.
this tutorial (Houston Chronicle) which looks kind of useful.
Edit, I’m also moving this to Feedback since you might get more feedback that way .. you don’t sound like you’re having technical problems getting the objects per se to work.
