!HUGE UPDATE: OCT-14! Clarkson Island *Working Title*
Clarkson Island, as its being called for now (its a working title. It might make more sense and even be a little funny if you know that I made Hammond Island), will attempt to be two-pronged.

1. Normal World
Basically your average world. It has all the lots, all the community spots, plenty of space for everybody and everything, all the spawners, etc, etc.

2. Build World
This is probably the more unusual of the two purposes. I want a lot builder world, but I want it to be functional and beautifully scenic. It needs to have a great variety of lot sizes, be reasonably speedy, and at the same time, for taking pictures, have GREAT views.

So. What do I want feedback on at the moment? Well, maybe some ideas of where to go. Whether you are interested in this idea of combining both 1 & 2, or whether you think its stupid; general ideas for names of stores, parks, whatever else. Maybe names will inspire me to create this stuff. Also, the trees. I wasn't sure about the combination. I absolutely ADORE the combination, but it could just be me. I rather like the contrast, see. And I love colour as well. I'd really rather not change them, but I'll see what you guys think. If there are enough of you that hate it, I'll change them.

Just take note of a couple of things in the screenshots before you comment. The road thats there, if you can see it, thats gonna change. It will match the terrain paint thats near the stairs. Also, my huts, that some of you may recognise from Temperance Bay, those are going to be coloured eventually. (I couldn't move on from them until they're put into at least 1 world that gets finished). Uhm, I think thats it..

Before I forget, I need to mention this.

Unless the feedback is overwhelmingly negative toward the idea, these EP's will be used.
  • Ambitions
  • Late Night
  • Pets
  • Showtime
  • Seasons (When it comes out)

There will also be mild custom content. Probably only stuff from MTS that I've used to build the homes or to piece the world together. These will definately include (because they've already been used in the screenshots), Simsillian's retaining walls, and armiel's DIY Build set.

By the way.. its nice to be back. The community spirit here never dies. You leave for an entire year and you're welcomed back like you never left. So thankyou.

This project sounds like it's definitely gonna be good if you finish it!
As for feedback on it, I really liked the lots from the last world you were working on (can't remember the name), maybe you could integrate some of those into it?
And I love the naming of it-correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a Richard street in Hammond island? (It's been a while since I've played it.)

Hahaha, yeah, there was, if I recall. I also had another island half finished at one point called 'May Island'. :P

Also, unfortunately, those lots, along with every other world I've worked on since I started simming were deleted somehow. i honestly cannot remember what happened to them. I managed to get a few lots from a friend, but these were from a different world. A very, very similar style to Temperance Bay's lots though, and I plan on putting these into the world.

A friend...

Not putting any pressure on you, but the 'friend' will expect you to at least 66% finish this world. Better yet if you upload it fully made. No pressure. None at all. You know how your 'friend' has a weird sense of humor.

The wee little beach huts are adorkable, still! But please wait till your 'friend' fixes those darn columns, can't have you using crappy CC made by your 'friend' just cause they work for what you want.

My 'friend' is, I'm sure, prepared to fix the columns, then? hahaha. They work really well, and I'm fairly sure they're in those lots I got from my 'friend' too. :P

EDIT: There are 72 columns of yours that I've used so far, 36 1/4 height, and 36 full height. When you redo them let me know. It shouldn't take me more than 30 minutes to replace them.. hopefully not even half that.

Your 'friend' fixed the columns, and cause they are a pro, they managed to do it so that you just have to re-download, but it replaces all already placed columns :D

The 'friend' will update this post once they have new files up.

no, i was thinking of naming a club 'the hamster wheel' though.. :P

UPDATE

Okay, so after working on it the whole day (avoiding my studies isn't good.. I shouldn't do it, but this has been fun), I have an update for you guys.
  • Fixed road textures
  • Finished beach huts (including putting the new columns in my game)
  • Built another lot. Its the one between the road and the retaining wall, with the park benches on it.
  • Working out more trees. This one was a little bit of an issue on my part. Basically, I figured out a nice look now. I've deleted the Aspens and the Birch's, and added oak trees, as well as the 'Slippery Elm' tree from Pets for a bit of colour... I reckon it looks great now.. so.. you know.. comment away.
  • Uhm, I've done basic sculpting for the lighthouse area of the coastline, stretching from the beach area to the lighthouse. I still have to add detailed sculpting to the cliffs though.. they're NOWHERE near finished. The paths that are there are just temporary. Eventually those will be dirt paths, they're only there at the moment because I needed them to sculpt properly
  • Added some distant islands, one of which you can see in the view out to see from the top of the stairs. I've used the 'Old Mill' from the Pets EP, and I think its kind of like.. Well, its interesting. It could be that thats where one of the original settlers lived. Also, I'm covering up the wheel on the Old Mill with bushes, because its quite stupid to have a water-mill in the middle of nowhere on an island where the only current is coming towards it anyway)
  • I've decided to use those flags from Pets as well. You'll see them on the main street (if thats what it ends up being), Personally, I think they look fantastic there.. they give it a really home-ish and quaint feel. You can see what I mean in the screenshots..

Before I forget, two things. On one of the screenshots (the one with the lighthouse), I've marked what LOOK like stairs. Well, thats what they are. The idea is that they'll lead up to the light-house, and they'll be kind of rustic and overgrown.

Also, I forgot, in my first post, to mention anything about how big I expect this to be. Its on a medium map, but I'm not keen to completely fill it up with islands. The idea was to put it on a medium instead of a small so that it doesn't end up completely square from me trying to fit as much into it as possible. As for lot count, when I'm finished, I expect between 75-150 lots. Though I HIGHLY doubt its going to reach 150.. Thats a lot of lots.. >.>

anyway, enough babbling. Enjoy screenshots, give feedback if you can, any is appreciated, all is welcome.

So I didn't get any feedback for my last lot of pictures, so I figured people liked what I had and didn't have any feedback, so I've moved on.

Uhm, I started the main town area.. First, the town hall. I hated the EA ones, mainly because they're just huge.. And I researched different methods for hiding it.. settled on Jynx's rugs. I will recolour SOME rabbit holes like the stadium, because they're just beyond skill to recreate (or I'll create a little park and put the rug there for it.. dunno yet..), but yeah.. So I've worked on two lots for this update. One, the town hall, the other, the town square.

I realise this might not seem like much.. but its the first thing I've built or even attempted to build in over a year. So.. You know. I think its good. Its not painted yet, everything is unCASTed, because I want to wait until I have the main buildings done, so I can choose colours that compliment eachother for everything.

I've used three more pieces of CC for the town hall. One is the fence cornice from Awesims, another the Clockface from AroundTheSims3, and the final one is the window, which is also from Awesims. The cornice and the window will be used throughout the world, but the clockface is specific to the town hall.

Anyway, feedback welcome.. I'm looking for feedback and ideas for the main town area now. Specifically, what I should build on either side of the central park lot...

Ooh, I love that the townhall has a view/path right down to the ocean (well, except for that big chuffing tree, lol), reminds me of a few little coastal towns I've been to The townhall itself is looking great, lots of awesome CFE work and the cornices and clock are imo definitely worth the CC hit. Can't wait to see them CASTed

About the tree... I'm all for them but imo I think if you're gonna have the path leading to the ocean you shouldn't block the view with trees that big. Also a Mayor should be able to see his flagpole from his office (which in my mind is the room with the long balcony! lol)

Townhall is looking great already! I agree with Rox on the tree though, and I would also like to see the shrubby fence gone on the entryway It just looks odd to me there.

What comes to lots on the side, I'd say a restaurant, maybe a bar, then something business like, for example a business lot, lol, and a salon/tattoo place, little bookstore...?

Just a quick update, I've decided to put this world onto a large map, instead of a medium. Not because I want it to get LARGE, but because I want to have the opportunity to do the edges right, without being constricted with the world edges. Plus.. I have no idea about the shape, so I needed a bigger canvas just to be safe.. So, I'm in the process of changing it over. Better I do it now when theres not even any painting done, than realise it needs to be bigger when I'm nearly done.

Also, while I will be doing that, I won't update the thread.. I figure it'll take me about 2 days (I have a whole bunch of stuff due at college next week, so it might take a little longer). Rest assured though, I will not be abandoning this project. I'm really excited about it, actually.

I simply LOVE your skills with CAW - especially these pictures damn near broke my heart, cos it's something I've been trying to do myself in weeks and never got it right. xD

https://thumbs2.modthesims.info/img/...s-1320204-2.jpg
[This isn't an item in CAW I possibly overlooked, but a custom-build stair, isn't it?!]

Since I'm a builder by heart and just occasionaly *play* the Sims once every blue moon (one or two times per year? I used to be such a Simmie-Tyrannt, but the building fever is hard to stop). I definitevely won't cast a stone regarding the "never finish anything"-aspect. I remember myself working on the one or other project for 5 years+ and still haven't been finished. I can sooooooooo understand your feelings.

I generally hate the community lots from EA - and prefer building and using that useful little rugs on my own (a lot). The one or other piece costum content won't hurt most of the community, after all we're a CC-sharing community. Those crybabies who only want cc-free downloads will have to suffer, cos the rest will cheer due to the love and detail you're giving this baby already. Gosh, I must sound like in love, but I highly enjoy seeing your progress. [Prolly because I just put some more started and never finished caw-worlds into the trash bin and feel delighted to see that I'm not the only one struggling, but at least you're getting something done.]

Good luck rezising this baby, might it be easier next time. =)

Still struggling with CAW :x

Hey again guys, I probably shouldn't just keep spamming my own thread with non-updates, but this is the last one, I swear.

College work is taking a little longer than I thought it would, but its all due early next week anyway, so I'm definately free after that till mid-october, so thats a whole month I can just work on the world and not worry about assessments.

The conversion is going okay. Not as easy as I thought it'd be, but its going. Uhm, I also got (I will when it gets here anyway), Supernatural. I dunno if its going to be required, but I don't plan on using any objects from it. I DO, however, plan to use those drainpipes that came with the 1.38 patch update this week. Fun!

Uhm. So this isn't a completely bare update, I'll give you guys a picture of the book/grocery store lot I was working on for the world before I decided to make it bigger. All the lots you see though, they'll be going into the larger world. So.. really.. this is gonna be in the new one. Hope you like it.

Also, quick note. You might notice in the screenshot, theres a bus-stop. Cute, right? Its exactly the same as I was building everywhere in Temperance Bay.. I managed to find a picture of it.

Also also, the only new cc in this lot is Jynx's rugs (unless I've mentioned those before. Cannot remember) and the food... display? thing. Thats from AroundtheSims. I searched for about 30 minutes looking for something default to put there, but there just wasn't anything so I went with CC.

Hahaha. I was waiting for you to comment. Its good. I swear. Theres no need to show Van Der Beek crying. :P

Also.. Which colours. The huts, the terrain, the sky? Hahaha. I don't have a lighting mod installed so thats why the colours are wierd on the huts. Believe me, they're just as bright as the last ones. As for the terrain, the colours will probably be similar, except I'm planning on making the grass more green than... dark. I remember what you said about that with Temperance, and although I LOVED that world, I've come to hate the colour of the grass. So.. There you go. Explain, anyway. Looking forward to getting feedback, Q.

So, I got supernatural... There are some really good objects in there for community lots, and I'm wondering if I should just use the EP.. How many people have gotten or plan on getting it, do you think?

EDIT

To make it easier for people, and so the whole thread isn't filled with people saying whether they're getting it or not, just click:

AGREE - If you ARE getting it
DISAGREE - If you ARE NOT getting it.

Thanks, I'd appreciate it if everyone could do this. I don't wanna put a few objects in from an EP that noone plans to get.

Okay, a proper update for you guys this time. Before I give pics, I should update you on progress, right?

I've redesigned the town centre.. I sat with a pencil and paper for a couple of hours yesterday sketching (among other things) road layouts for this world. I might upload the sketch soon, but.. eh. Can't really be bothered at the moment. Uhm, yeah. I ripped out the old town square, the old walking path along the retaining wall, and replaced those, and I also built a brand new school, theatre and the building next to the theatre (which is going to be a consignment store).

As you can no doubt tell from the screenshots, the actual buildings themselves are coloured, but the fiddly bits and windows and stuff aren't. I just wanted to get a feel for the colours before I got carried away colouring all the little stuff.

The theater is inspired by art deco theaters I've imagined in my mind.. Its simple, I know.. To you guys, probably not the best thing you've seen.. But I absolutely ADORE it. The entry for the theatre will have a little ticket desk and red carpet, etc, which will also have the Rabbit Hole rug there.

The doors on all the buildings, those white framed ones, they're from Supernatural, as is the big sign on the roof of the grocery store and the air conditioning unit on the school.. I'll litter more stuff like that throughout.

Uhm, I'm gonna make it so the only place I use Supernatural will be in the buildings themselves, that way, for anyone that doesn't have/isn't getting Supernatural, they can download the world and do whatever they want with it still, and I'll just upload two versions, with/without lots, which I was going to do anyway because of the whole 'build' concept.

Anyways.. comments, ideas. What else should I do for the town center?

/me leaves a sleepy comment, a promise to comment better when is awake again and has a moment of time to really look in to the beautiful buildings.

ETA
Alright, comments huh? :P

I like the theater, the only thing I find a little lacking is the gray color on the side, and on the bit above the door - it looks like the plain wall you get when you build. You could try fiddling with it just a bit, change the pattern to something with a little more texture. A little.

The school I adore, it just looks so cute, and school-like. Can one say a school is cute? I can :P

The cityhall grass fence things I still do not like. But I don't like the fence in general.

The grocery store - is that one of the buildings you snatched from the world I sent you? :P

Anyhow, the architecture looks great, wouldn't expect any less from you. Looking forward on seeing more. As for suggestions for the town, don't have any just now.

Okay guys, I desperately need feedback. I've kinda stalled because I can't seem to be satisfied with the river/bridge area.

I just can't get it the way it could be... It doesn't meet up with the suburban areas properly.

I've included a screenshot with my current plan on it, but I absolutely dispise it.. I hate the shape of the land, all of it. So if you wanna help and draw on the picture, change it. Cause of this, I've included another screenshot, the same one but blank. I was REALLY hoping people could download it, draw on what they think should happen, then upload it for me to look at. Hopefully we can come up with a solution together.

A few points before you do though;
  • the bridge area will be HIGHER than everything else thats currently on these screenshots; Including all the suburban lots, because I want to add a watefall somewhere along it, because I'm gonna add a water-plane.
  • The bridge has to be either completely horizontal, completely vertical or exactly diagonal. It can't be like.. 10 degrees. because the way I want to make this bridge, it would be near impossible for me to line it all up otherwise.
  • You can move the mouth of the river, the location of the river, anything. Change the shape of the land, whatever. There is TONNES of room left on the map on all sides so anything you guys come up with, there will definately be enough space.
  • At some point along the river I'm going to have a railway bridge as well, just so you know. Its fine if it goes toward the suburban areas because the idea of it is that half of it was ripped up when they started development of the new, improved island.
  • One more.. I was hoping to have some sort of big lake-ish thing at the end, like in my screenshot, for some tents and camping and stuff. Probably some mountains too.

Apart from this obvious issue I'm having.. Progress is.. okay. I've built one of the suburban areas which is going to have cliff homes and these are explained in the screenshot.

Anyway.. PLEASE. If you view this thread, GIVE feedback. I don't care if its a silly idea, you might inspire me.

Ok, it seems to me what you need for inspiration is really just to do the following two things:

- Finish/perfect the contours. Get rid of all those sharp drops, it will help you visualize better.
- Work on the terrain paint. Beaches should be at least a little sandy. Again, seeing the land contours finished will help you visualize it all better.

Once that is done, maybe it won't seem so bad, because it looks pretty darned good to me! I think what you need is inspiration and a sense that various bits are done, subject to only minor tweaking. Keep it up!

I don't paint the terrain until the end, unfortunately. It avoids having to use various tricks and wierdness to avoid doubling or even tripling certain paints. Since you can't re-order them. And I can't really sculpt the cliffs if I don't know whats going there yet.. The cliffs I've sculpted, those are set. They're not changing.. But the jagged ones, those are just where the terrain is going to go eventually, once I figure out what to do there. If I sculpted all those the same way I've sculpted the finished cliffs, it'd be hours upon hours of unusable work because I'd have to resculpt once I figured it out anyway

I've very roughly edited your picture with my thoughts. Put the mountain / hill for the waterfall where I've drawn the circle so that it dumps into the large pool / basin you've drawn. Extend the road as I've marked for the bridge. I think that the bridge should be able to be done at a 90 or 45 degree angle. The road you marked for the bridge could follow along the base of the mountains/hills at the edge of the water. Hope this helps! Good luck with your gorgeous world!
