As to the columns fading out, while there is no Maxis fix there is a mod that may help. It's the wonderful Shimrod101's mod "No Fade Sims and Objects" http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=533846

They call me The Seeker.
I've been searching low and high.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't work on columns and ceiling lamps

Hopefully something will come out that will fix it.
