I'm so happy you guys want to hear more! Let's continue with our story, this time focusing on Siri Kim In my style of play I like to expand on what the game gives us, interpreting and playing the characters as more evolved personalities than the game itself gives us. Over the years I have found that the game has an almost magical ability to pick up on how you view a Sim, and have them act accordingly. But sometimes they fight you, and Tom is one of those characters for me.
Chapter 1 - Siri Kim & the Sjöströms
The Sjöströms have a very traditional form of marriage. Sigrid does all the cleaning and cooking, and feels the most responsible for the everyday care of Siri. She is very maternal, and has a lot of love to give. Before they were given Siri, she bought a hamster so that she would have a creature to shower with love when Tom was at work or busy. She makes sure there is always food to eat, and she keeps the house very neat and homely.
Tom in turn maintains the garden, and sees himself as the family provider. He doesn't know how to cook or clean, he handles the finances and makes the big decisions for the family. He likes to quietly watch the news or read the newspaper as Sigrid goes about her day, or work on his collection of junk cars out in the yard. He loves Sigrid's cooking and will happily gobble up anything she puts on the table. He cares deeply about his wife, and despite his traditional views of the role of a man and woman in the house, he can't quite help himself from sneaking off to attempt to clean the toilet or shower whenever he notices that Sigrid is tired or overworked. He's no good at saying the words, but he loves her dearly.
Tom also has a very sweet bond with his daughter, he's always so proud of his little girl. Because Siri grew up with two parents on the brink of elder-hood and no siblings she became a bit of a old-for-her-age kid. She never had much interest in making friends with kids her own age, and prefers to to just hang out at home with her parents.
Tom would often be out in the yard when Siri returned home from school, working on his cars or taking care of gardening chores.
He raked those leaves to go compost them, but he doesn't have the heart to tell Siri no. If she's having fun, then he'll gladly do the same work twice, no problem. He'll pretend to give her a stern eye, but secretly he's smiling.
It's kind of a badly kept secret though, Siri knows her dad loves her quite a bit.
After they got the leaves cleared/fully played with, Tom took Siri to the mall so he could treat her to some new clothes. After all she just grew up, and she could use more things in her wardrobe.
Before they headed home they played a game of chess together, talking about her birthday party. Tom has noticed that Siri is quite clever, and he does his best to encourage her to engage in activities that will help her develop her intelligence.
Sigrid's job has her leave the house ungodly early in the morning, so Tom is in charge of breakfast most mornings. Sigrid cooks it, but he serves and keeps Siri company.
Tom and Sigrid dote on Siri and they always make sure to take time to do fun activities together on the weekend, like heading to one of the local bowling alleys.
To give Sigrid a break from cooking, Tom tends to suggest they dine out after their outings.
"Dad, can I please have soda with my food?" asks Siri
"Sure honey, waiter, could you bring us a soda please?" says Sigrid. Dad isn't the only one inclined to give Siri what she wants. She could have gone rotten brat, but Lena chose well. Siri is very appreciative of things and does not ask for too much.
You never can have too much fun, so they decide to stop and watch a movie too.
When mommy is home from work, it's girls time! By now autumn had turned to winter, with snow aplenty to play in.
Tom wants the very best for his daughter, he wants her to be something one day. He's worked tough jobs his whole life, and he does not want that kind of menial low paying labor job for his baby girl. He's no academic himself, he's more of a hands on tinkering type. He's very good with engines, his employers wanted to promote him to airplane mechanic but his love of cars made him turn down that opportunity to stay where he was. He would like his daughter to pursue something academic, and he knows she has the brains to so. Fortunately, she finds science fascinating and she loves to learn.
He'd often chose to read her to sleep, all on his own. I usually need a chair next to head of bed to tell Sims to read kids to sleep, but where there is a will there is a way, apparently.
When Tom was busy with his cars or mending something in the house, Sigrid would take over the reading.
Siri says homework is important! And fun!
It was in school that Siri discovered her love of space. To encourage her academic progress Tom invested in a really fancy telescope so that Siri can look at the stars for real and not just in books.
Siri is over the moon over this gift, and thanks her dad with a great big hug.
Sigrid is actually a scientist in her job, but she lets that be Toms thing with Siri. She shows her love in other ways. She enjoys teaching Siri to cook, they have a lot of fun hanging out in the kitchen together. This year she and Siri made some santa cookies, to get ready for the holidays.
Tom did not help, but he gets a piece of the end product anyway. He's the official judge, though he's not very good because he gives everything a 10 out of 10.
Siri adores her telescope and often begs her parents to stay up later so she can look at the stars. They know sleep is important, but her excitement is so palpable that they often indulge and let her stay just a little whole longer.
Though her dad makes sure she is well rounded by insisting she participate in varied activities. Chess is a favorite, because he gets to play with her.
They take regular family trips to the bowling alley. It wouldn't be an outing without some dessert! They have a real sweet tooth in this family.
As winter turned towards spring, it became Sigrids birthday.
Not long after it was Tom's turn to go grey.
"Go dad go, you can do it!" says Siri
Sigrid made home made cake for his birthday. None of that store-bought stuff for this family! There is always a supply of cookies, cake or pie in the fridge in this house, in case someone has a late night craving.
Tom does his best to help Siri with her homework.
Siri devours every newspaper and book she can find that talks about space. Like this months copy of "Developments in space research", she's very excited to read the article titled "Telescope owners - where should you turn it to next"
Now that Sigrid is an elder, she made the decision to retire from her job as a marine biologist. Once they had Siri, she sort of lost her passion fo rit. She always felt like she was abandoning her child when she got up at the crack of dawn to go to work, leaving before Siri even woke up. Often missing breakfast, unable to see her off to school. Even though she was there two days a week, to Sigrid it felt like every day was the day she missed out. Even though she'd always be there to welcome her home after school, with a snack or a hug, she felt she was not giving her daughter enough time. She wanted to be there all day every day, and retirement means she can.
From today and every day from now on, they can have breakfast together. More mom-daughter bonding time, exactly what Sigrid wanted.
Siri always loved the outdoors. She's especially fond of fall/winter, because there's leaves and snow to play in. Even though they have a pool, she never really cared for bathing. She preferred the swings and natural nature. Tom starts a snowman in hopes that she'll want to come help him.
And of course she does want to do just that.
All too soon it was time for their little Siri to grow up yet again.
"Why don't you serve the cheesecake mom, and I'll clear away this cheap cake."
I do not have much pictures of it, but Siri was always a very helpful child. Growing up in the household she did definitely contributes, watching her mom always be the one to cook and clean she sort of understood that was something she should be good at. She was happy to help her mom out, whether it be cleaning or taking over making dinner so Sigrid could have a rest. They had long bonded over cooking together, and Sigrid made sure to also teach Siri the value of having a clean well-looked after home with some cozy details.
"Now you're hitting the next stage of your life Siri, it's time to think about what road you're going to take. You may go here or there, but in the end your goal should be the same. Study hard!".
And so time passed. Siri, although now a teen, still preferred coming straight home after school to spend time with her parents. These days they can't quite keep up and often need an afternoon nap, but Siri doesn't mind. She knows how to keep herself entertained on her own.
It is rather early, but excited about her academic prospects Tom suggested a trip to the store so Siri could try on some college clothes.
Celebrating New Years!
"I'm not sure this is a good idea Siri. Why don't you ask him to leave it?" says a concerned Sigrid.
"He'll be fine mom!" Siri insists, because she wants to see the fireworks.
It was not fine, in fact Tom managed to set himself on fire. But fortunately he did it next to the pool.
"Mom, get the bucket get the bucket!"
I was kind to Tom and did not take any pictures of him in his sooted burnt state. I figured he would be ashamed enough as it was that he couldn't light the fireworks without catching on fire, no need to remind him of it. But he had a shower and tried again and this time it went better.
Sigrid and Tom thought it was a bit too bright and loud, but Siri loved it.
Tom never can resist making his little girl smile, so even though he found it unpleasantly loud, he had a go with the poppers too. Sigrid rather enjoyed watching him make a fool of himself just for Siri's entertainment.
Of course, any time Siri was allowed to be up late she'd spend hours by her telescope. Her parents got her an upgrade for Christmas this year, as she was starting to push the limits of what her old telescope could do.
Siri is also quite gifted creatively. Her father tends to push her more in the logic direction, but her mother always insisted that she can do both. Many afternoons she'd play piano for her mum, and Sigrid would break out her best dance moves.
That's it for today. Hope you all enjoyed it, if you made it this far :lovestruc
If anyone wonders why I write Siri Kim and not Siri Sjöström, it's because her parents see giving birth as something miraculous. They could hardly believe they were so lucky as to get this child that someone else brought into the world. So when they adopted her, they decided to leave her name as it was as homage to her heritage and her birth parents. They decided it was up to her to choose, once she was older, if she wanted to take their name or remain Siri Kim. Sometime after they gave her the telescope, she asked them if she could be called Kim-Sjöström. Needless to say her parents were very touched, and happily obliged. So now she's Siri Kim-Sjöström, but when this episode began she was still known as Siri Kim
