CHAPTER 1. Polybius

And there I think I'll leave it for now. I had a few more pictures, but its turned out longer than I thought, so I'll save them for another post.

Good start. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

EDIT: I am so freaked out right now. I'm downgrading my system to Windows 8, and I didn't back anything up (I didn't have room). I'm just posting here in the superstitious hope that it will prevent anything from going wrong. After all, if I've made a big deal about it, it'll be nothing. If I treat it like nothing, I'll lose all my files, have to reboot my storylines, and will be set back over a year.

I don't have strong reason to suspect that anything is going to go wrong, but I don't know… This has pretty much been my life for the past half year (I'm a dork; I know). If I lose it…

EDIT: Preliminary indications are that everything went fine. Except the game's windowed mode is still messed up. *grumble grumble* …stupid… *grumble*

EDIT: Got it fixed.

I'm glad to hear it. I know that feeling: you put your heart and soul into a thing only for disaster to strike. I'm still old fashioned enough to write my ideas down in a note book, (I mean a an actual book), and a while back I lost one, must have left it on a bus or something. I was distraught, I felt like I'd lost a child. Well, perhaps not quite as bad as that, but you know what I mean. I was obsessed about some asshole pinching all my ideas. Mind you, my handwriting being practically illegible, they'd have a hard job understanding any of it!
Anyway, glad everything is working right for you, and thanks once again for all your help.

Just in case anybody thinks I have abandoned Obadiah and the rest: don't worry, I'll get back to them. I think much of it will centre around the various comings and goings between St Fred's and Dunwarren. And besides, the Colonel is on the school's board of governors and an old friend of Dr Scumthorpe. And Quincy Grime will feature in it too: what better target for Form 3's pranks?

St. Freds is an old idea, from long before I'd ever heard of The Sims. But the game became a way to bring it and its characters to 'life'. And I make no apologies for introducing it now, because I think it is what my project needed. I was reading through some of the earlier pages of this thread, and it suddenly came to me what was missing from my story: children. One of the my chief joys in reading about Mingham-Smith's Scumthorpes was seeing his bizarre world through the eyes of the Scumthorpe triplets and all their friends in class 6F.

Elynda is a fairy of the good persuasion and must perforce love all children, it sort of goes with the job (although in the case of Miles and Giles she confesses to having some difficulties) For my own part I can never create enough cute tykes and little terrors for The Sims 3: perhaps that is the frustrated mother instinct in me (as Miss Millicent Fritton might say). And, like Mingham-Smith, I like to defy the contraints that EA has placed upon the game, by giving them all well defined characters and interesting stuff to do. In brief, I want them to have adventures!

So here is St. Freds, finally completed.

It is actually 3 separate lots placed as close together as possible. The main part, or 'Abbey', was built on the ruins of an ancient monastery. Over to the left is the 'Priory' and, behind that, the newest addition is the 'Hermitage'. That used to be located at some distance and was scheduled for demolition. But thanks to her influence with the Riverblossom Hills Historical Buildings Trust (and a generous donation by Colonel Sir Henry Standing) Dr Scumthorpe had it dismantled stone by stone and re-erected here. In terms of game play these function as separate households, of course, but in story terms they are all part of St Fred's.

Is it anyone else's experience that high rises are practically impossible to take shots from inside? I really wanted to put Plumbob in a high rise, but the camera is in open, violent, revolt. I'm thinking I'm gonna have to move things around a bit.

It's not just high rise buildings, it's any lot that has an un-editable external shell. I downloaded a fancy pants mansion off here and have the exact same overshooting camera issues. Does my nut in.

Mingham-Smith: Thanks for that. I can now start showing my senior girls. What I had them wearing wasn't quite right: not the look I was after anyway - far too modern high school, rather than English girl's boarding school.
Didn't know that about testingcheatsenabled, thanks for that too.

Oh, by the way, sorry I forgot to mention it earlier (I was so taken up with 'Polybius'), but you mentioned something about a Burroughs style planetary romance. Yeah, I'd;like to see that! I'm a John Carter fan of long standing. Carson Napier too - bring em all on!

Glad to hear that. I'm a big fan of the genre, myself. Back in high school, in my sci-fi class, the teacher asked us to guess the names of three sci-fi authors, going only by the first letters of their names. For b, he wanted Bradbury, but I guessed Burroughs, leading to questions about what Tarzan has to do with sci-fi (although from what I've read, the series does veer that way later on). Heh. Honestly, I really think that older styles of sci-fi like that are underrated by modern fans and authors alike. I would love it if the genre could be brought back, maybe even with modern science, but retaining that pulpy, idealistic, fantastical atmosphere.
I have to admit, though, I haven't read as much as I'd like to say I have. I've read the first two Barsoom books and started the third in the series plus the first Amtor book. I have copies of both the second Amtor book and The Moon Maid, but I haven't gotten to those yet. I do have a couple of Robert L. Forward books, which seem to be a modernised take on the same genre, but I haven't done much with those, either.
I do love what I've read, though, and I'm a huge space nerd, so I fully intend to explore the genre at some point. Actually, I could get quite a lot of material out of that. I already have a moonbase world, and I think a Venus world would be really easy to make, even for me. I'd love to use Mars, but the only Mars world I ever saw was an abandoned project that never even got to the download stage. Sadly, I don't think I could fake it myself to my satisfaction. I'd also love to do a gas giant, but the only way I can even see that maybe working is with an unholy amount of fog spawners, so while I'm not ruling it out, I doubt it's happening. I did try to start a Mercury world, but I'm not sure I can pull off the crater detailing. I do think I can easily see how to manage Europa, though, and I suspect that Titan wouldn't be hard. I could always do an exoplanet, of course, but that's not as much fun.

Ewenk7: the only Burroughs science fiction stuff I never got round to reading were the Pellucidar stories, and sadly they seem to be out of print now. But I believe that Tarzan got involved in those adventures. There was a film sort of based on them: At The Earth's Core, starring Doug McClure (natch) and Peter Cushing in his dotty but loveable scientist role, but sadly no Tarzan.

When i was younger I was always planning to write 'sequels' to some of Burroughs books (where there seemed to be the need for one). One in particular being 'Fighting Man of Mars', where the hero is Tan Hadron, a soldier in the Warlord's service. In that story he meets and falls in love with Tavia, a young slave girl, who turns out to be no mean swordswoman herself. But later on in the the Martian series, Tan Hadron disappeared and we never did learn what happened to him. Well, that was going to be my way in to a sequel: "Swordswoman of Mars", with Tavia setting out, sword in hand, to find her lost love. Sadly it never got beyond chapter 1, I suppose I just lack Burrough's weird and wonderful imagination.

As for CAW, it is early days for me there, I'm just finding my way about. But how I long to create something special and unique of my own. Sigh!

EDIT: Well, since there appears to be a danger of my derailing the thread here, and as I'm all ready to go with this, I'd better finish off Chapter One.

And that's it for now. More to follow soon, when we shall learn more of Polybius Scumthorpe.

Okay, I think we all want to see that now. I have no idea how you would manage it, and I have no idea if it's possible or if you were even serious, but holy heck, do we want to see that.

How are your world creation skills? I've been thinking about taking a crack at a Titan world, among other things. The only obstacle at this point is figuring out the sky/water/lighting parameters so I can make everything suitably orangey-brown…

Mingham-Smith Re: LESTER SCUMTHORPE OF TITAN

Lester would be even better at it than John Carter, Titan having less gravity than Mars. I'm just imagining him in a G string though! Burroughs' heroes generally don't go in for much clothing.

EDIT:

Oh, and ewenk7: just a suggestion that might be rather in your line, considering the good job you made of those 'Maggot Men'
.
There was a posthumously published novella by Burroughs entitled "John Carter and the Skeleton Men of Jupiter". They weren't really skeletons, of course (not like Bonehilda), but their flesh was so spare and emaciated (as well as transparent) that they appeared to be skeletons. They weren't very pleasant characters either: being just about to launch an invasion fleet against Mars. Might be something you could try (the Skeleton Men bit, I mean. You needn't bother invading mars).

My first thought was that he probably doesn't clean himself much, but other sims wear cloths and are made of meat so the other two don't sound hard for him . . .

I still don't have an overall title for this story. Perhaps something will come to me when I've a clearer idea where the story is going. In the meantime, here is the second chapter.

I wouldn't worry too much about titling things. I title everything, but that's because I'm an obsessive nutcase. Most of the people here haven't, as I recall. Even Mingham just calls it "The Scumthorpe Dynasty" or something like that.
