Default Sir Terry Pratchett
Probably one of the best authors in the entire Universe has passed. I am gutted. His Disc World creation was total genius.
The Site -wide announcement here on MTS tells me that Terry's Foul 'ol Ron must be around somewhere. My reply to Foul Ol' Ron is .. Oook

WE'VE GOT A FEW MINUTES, said Death, taking a drink from a passing tray, LET'S MINGLE.
'They can't see me either!' said Mort. 'But I'm real!'
REALITY IS NOT ALWAYS WHAT IT SEEMS, said Death. ANYWAY, IF THEY DON'T WANT TO SEE ME, THEY CERTAINLY DON'T WANT TO SEE YOU. THESE ARE ARISTOCRATS, BOY. THEY'RE GOOD AT NOT SEEING THINGS. WHY IS THERE A CHERRY ON A STICK IN THIS DRINK?
'Mort,' said Mort automatically.
IT'S NOT AS IF IT DOES ANYTHING FOR THE FLAVOUR. WHY DOES ANYONE TAKE A PERFECTLY GOOD DRINK AND THEN PUT IN A CHERRY ON A POLE?

Be sure to read the last handful of posts on his twitter if you feel like sobbing like a child.

@Don_Babilon My sincere hope is that Pterry was greeted by a certain someone scratching his cat behind the ears and asking if he were ready to leave. As I've said elsewhere today, Death has to collect wizards in person.

See the little angels rise up high.
How do they rise up, rise up, rise up?

Yeah I saw them and .... yeah well ... I think one of the key reasons I'm so heartbroken is that I introduced my teenage son to DiscWorld last year, and it's been a joy watching him discover it - I re-read all of the DiscWorld books again from the beginning so my son would have someone to talk to about those amazing discoveries such as Death, the Librarian. Detritus 'Don't Salute!' the Troll and Sam Vimes and his Personal Disorganizer Imp conversations ... My son and I even go DiscWorld book hunting in goodwill shops because my son now collects the different covers ... His writing kept me and my son connected at a time when in many teenagers lives they don't want to be connected to parents who are not 'cool'. Sir T became part of my family in so many ways .. I mean bloody hell, we don't have hotdogs in our house, we have sausage innabun ... and as fellow Sir T fans know, once tasted they are never forgotten...

I think this is appropriate

"DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING, said Death. JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH.”

I feel numb and can't fathom that the Genius has left the Earth. Where can we find his equal. The more i learn of the world and it's history the more it becomes clear just what an amazing giant of a mind he was. He had a way to translate even the most abstract and complicate problems and make sence of it all. His mirror of the world was at times grim to behold because he wrote the truth, but he always left me a feeling of hope for the human race. If the world can produce devils it always balance it with angels. I thank him for all the wonderful stories and his amazing truthfulness in all he wrote. I just wish he did not have to leave us alone, but in a way we'll always have him with us thanks to his writing. Rest in peace Terri and have lots of adventures in the afterlife with Death and Binky.

HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
'Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little -'
YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
'So we can believe the big ones?'
YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
'They're not the same at all!'
YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET - Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME... SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.
'Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point -'
MY POINT EXACTLY

It's such sad news. I hope Death was exactly as Sir Terry imagined him, complete with the Death of Rats.

Terry, thank you for all the years of enjoyment I had reading your books. I hope you are now at peace.

I would like to post the following for those that may not have seen it.

Pratchett's death was also announced on his Twitter account, with a series of tweets that began: "AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER."
It continued: "Terry took Death's arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night."
"The End."

I've never felt this way about the passing of a public figure before
I've actually made a little folder on my computer to store tributes to him.
I actually cried about it yesterday.

This is very sad news, I grew up reading the Discworld books, I still love reading them now. In a way it was even sadder to hear when he first developed Alzheimer's disease, for someone with such a great imagination and a fascinating mind to begin to lose it.

RIP Terry Pratchett, you will be missed.

It is incredibly sad. I knew he was very ill, but I still didn't expect him to go so soon. His twitter feed just totally felled me.

Very sad, 66 is too young to go.
I'm not much of a reader so not familiar with Discworld, but the name rung a bell because I loved Companion Vilja in TES Oblivion and I remembered he wrote some of her dialogue.
I recalled an article where someone interviewed him and he mentions how he'd recreated his version of Sweden in the game with Vilja as his companion and rather than fighting enemies, he'd plant gardens and sell stuff. Thought at the time it was pretty cool and felt a connection to him in that way. Found the article: https://bookwitch.wordpress.com/in-...es-funny-books/

It's very sad to think their will be no more excellent books to come from one of my favourite authors. At least he will be well remembered by those still reading his books.
I would have loved to thank him for the hundreds of happy hours I have had reading his books.
