Items that are missing the mesh they're linked to will usually show as a generic Maxis outfit (often Basegame) in the thumbnail for both Bodyshop and CAS, and will misbehave slightly (maxis outfit shows, not always the one in the thumbnail), so you are usually going to know if a mesh is missing. Reasonably sure that's not what's causing your problem.
Usually when you get that error,
1: The item uses RAW textures instead of DXT (Bodyshop generally struggles with RAW-32 textures)
2: The item has something else wrong* in the file (that doesn't affect how it shows up ingame, but affects Bodyshop's ability to draw out the resources)
3: The file has something wrong* in it that affects both Bodyshop and CAS/ingame.
*exactly what's wrong depends on the item type and what has been edited outside of Bodyshop.
Most items that have been created in Bodyshop and not edited further shouldn't be a problem, though messing too much with the template files apart from just editing the textures can sometimes cause issues. I've had some template files that straight up stopped working/trew errors after I tried editing them with SimPE, or even after editing the categories in Bodyshop (when reusing them), so these days I just wait with the editing until I've imported the files to SavedSims.
I can take a look at the files if you want - do you have a link to the orignal files?
