Necklaces are usually an Overlay added on top of the base texture. The easiest way to remove them is to open up whatever CAS part you're trying to change and extract the Overlay texture. Open up the overlay in an image program of your choice then completely black out the alpha channel of said overlay. Re-save the image and import back into CTU.

Alternatively you can just type in the key number of an already blank overlay from another CAS part....although this is more trouble than simply importing a new texture.

Gimp is good, but not very easy for beginners.

But you don't have to "blacken" the "alpha channel". It's way easier, to just import the overlay, and simply use the rubber / tool or just delete the necklace using a selection. This way, you won't kill buttons, etc. too

If you want just set the overlay to empty, there are easiert ways. In ctu, you can for example replace the overlay key with "key:00B2D882:00000000:34CC2DBA7857B5CB", that is the game's default empty overlay.

Depends on the clothing. In this case you seem to need to edit the base texture, in other cases you wil need the overlay, and sometimes you maybe need to edit even both.

You should change the Following:
DXT3 to DXT5
select Generate Mipmaps
And set mipmap generation to either Cubic or Kaiser for higher quality

Looks OK otherwise

You need to black out the necklace area on the alpha channel Simply erasing it on the base texture will get you nowhere

I personally don't know how to use Photo Deluxe...but you'll want to look for something that says "channels" or maybe "decompose". Or you might want to google how to edit color channels in Phot Deluxe or whatever it's called.

Edit - I believe that last black and white sreenshot you posted was the alpha.

Erasing it should make the alpha channel black. If not, then it's a very weird image editor.

Not with photoshop, the texture and the alpha channels are independent. I think that technique only works with Gimp and Paint.NET...not sure though.

You need a plugin to open DDS files with GIMP. Grab it from here

The gimp plugin is good for opening DDS files, but produces very bad result when compressing them and doesn't like images with multiple layers.

You can use your settings with DTX5 for testing, but for the final result, I recommend that you use nvdxt for the dxt compression.

I use a batch file like this:

Code:
"C:\program files\NVIDIA Corporation\DDS Utilities\nvdxt.exe" -Sinc -quality_highest -dxt5 -file multiplier.tga
"C:\program files\NVIDIA Corporation\DDS Utilities\nvdxt.exe" -Sinc -quality_highest -dxt1c -file specular.tga
"C:\program files\NVIDIA Corporation\DDS Utilities\nvdxt.exe" -Sinc -quality_highest -dxt5 -file mask.tga
"C:\program files\NVIDIA Corporation\DDS Utilities\nvdxt.exe" -Sinc -quality_highest -dxt5 -file bumpmap.tga

You probably need to edit file names and path names. And then save the files just as tga in gimp and let nvdxt do the dds conversion.

You can get nvdxt here: http://developer.nvidia.com/object/...ies_legacy.html

I think Photoshop is much more easier to use than Gimp/Paint.NET...albeit I'm a bit biased because I've been using Photoshop since the dawn of time.

I think a good imaging program like Photoshop/Paint Shop Pro is worth shelling out the big bucks for. They're a good longterm investment and you can use them for years.

If you have a computer capable of running TS3, there's no good reason not to use CS4 (the current version – 7.0 is several years old), it should run just fine on your machine. I don't think you're going to find a 7.0 trial, it's unlikely that Adobe would still support it.

Or, if the price of the latest version of Photoshop is too steep for your budget (as is the case with me!) you could buy a second-hand copy of an older version, as I did. I use version 6 and it does everything I need to do for The Sims (and for everything else I do, for that matter!). If you don't need the added features in CS4 for other purposes, any version back to 6 will be fine for TS3.
