Default Win Tournament (Martial Arts) challenge
As part of the greater Dragon Maw adventure, I have to win a martial arts tournament. I have to defeat Biyu Shen, the book merchant. However, she is always at work when I call, & if I go to her, the option to spar doesn't show up. The only time it ever shows up is when my sim is too tired to spar, & so it's greyed out.

I've seen other people on here with problems sparring with Biyu, but for a different challenge. I've tried up-ing my relationship status with her (we're "best friends" now), I don't have any mods installed, and I've even invited her home and sparred with her there.

Help!

Some additional info. that may or may not be helpful --

I don't just have to win a tournament, but become the Grand Master. Another part of this same adventure is to reach Level 10 of the Martial Arts skill, which I have.

I've sparred with lots of other Sims, both at home & in China, with no trouble.

I'm glad I'm not the only one having issues with Biyu Shen.

You need to have a good relationship to spar, are you friends with Biyu Shen?

Yup, best friends. I've even invited her home & sparred with her there. Just doesn't work in China.

Is she a merchant in your game? From what I can tell, the merchants never leave their stores. I don't get it.

Oh my God. I have trouble fighting her too. Has anyone figured out or gave up?

ok here's a trick to get Biyu-Shen out of her store. use the debug cheat then shift+click on the ground and click buy in the lot. enter the buydebug cheat and replace her cash register and hopefully another will fill in her shoes. im having the spar problem too, it only shows when it feels like it.

The problem with unchallengeable merchants being assigned as duel opponents is caused by NOT USING AWESOMEMOD. This is a bug in the game that has no other solution, so ACCEPT NO KEWIAN-BASED SUBSTITUTES.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I cannot accept, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill because they pissed me off.

Yes I'm pretty sure she is a merchant. I went to her house in the evening and could spar with her, and I invited her to the martial arts academy during the day using the phone and she turned up and I sparred with her.

And I have no awesomemod :P

I just had the "unchallengable merchant situation" as well, as described above.
I simply hit F5, chose "Edit neighbourhood", found her household, chose "Split houshold", moved her to clipboard, chose "Return to game". Obviously, I got a warning about poor Kim Yung being about to be deleted - which I accepted without remorse.
Poof, Kim Yung gone for good.
Now with her gone, I got a new random tournament opponent.

Is this the same challenge as the one where the military tells you to go to China to participate in a regional martial arts tournament? Mine went, challenged the ranked player to a match, beat him and went home and the challenge STILL said he needed to go back to China to continue the challenge? Does he have to fight everyone to get to the top before the challenge is satisfied?

Short answer - yes. I recieved this opportunity and it was only satified after I got to rank 5 and won the whole tournament.

I can invite over my tournament opponent and she comes over but I am unable to spar with her. I also can't seem to be able to spar with anyone else. Any tips?

the only time I had trouble is when my female sim couldn't spar I happened to noticed she was pregnant, So I ended the pregnancy and wala she could finish the spar challenge then. Hope this helps some of you.

Yeah, I just ran into this "doesn't want to spar" bug, and solved it as follows: testingcheatsenabled true, moveobjects on, shift-click on the ground and choose "enter buy mode here", click the recalcitrant sparring opponent and delete em. Now you should have a new next opponent. This is pretty much the same solution as xstof256's above, but my version is a bit quicker. I am pretty sure that deleting a sim in this way will not result in the whole neighborhood being borked, but I can't confirm that

If the person you're deleting wasn't homeless, yes, this is bad for your neighborhood. It's not unrecoverable, but you can't fix it with the tools in an unmodified game. AwesomeMod should correct the unsparrable issues, but if you find a case of someone being unsparrable, let me know. If you're not using AwesomeMod, your game is already horribly broken anyway.

I'm in China right now because of a military opportunity, and my opponent won't spar. He says he's at work and doesn't know when he'll be done. I spent 9 days in China and called him every couple of hours. I'm back and this dude is still at work. I went to his house, he's never there and I can't find where he works to delete him.

Thankyou so much for this info. I'm trying to win the tournament to defeat Dong Huo but my sim won't spar with anyone, but I just realised that I think she is pregnant. Stupid babies!!!
