I don't use any mods to lower wages, and those that don't have a maxis job have mods to make it easier to live off alternative methods, so while things cost money, they can earn a bunch too. One of my fortune YAs managed to save up 30k and get straight A's during his studies.
I do like the idea though of it costing more than it does. For the challenge more than anything else. I also like the ideas of certain sims needing to purchase equiptment for their major as they go along. Even if it's just clutter. I might steal that one, @AliaD85!
