This mod requires Cyjon's Smarter EP Check, found here: http://cyjon.net/node/323, and at least one expansion pack after University (any one will do).

Now updated to version 2.0 for more flexibility and easier updates for custom careers

In the real world, it is not possible to be a doctor, a teacher, a scientist, or a lawyer without a degree. While the lowest levels of the career are something that anyone can do, very quickly you would find that the next job up is only available with the right qualifications.

Other careers, however, don't need to be so strict. Why would criminals or gamers care what sort of education you've had? And why do you need a degree to get any job in Paranormal?

If you've ever been bothered by this in your sims 2 games, this mod is for you!

How does it work?
Sims get Education Points depending on their previous studies:
  • Sims that failed high school get 0 points.
  • Sims that achieved between D- and C- at high school get 1 point.
  • Sims that achieved at least a C at high school but either never went to university or dropped out early (or were created in CAS) get 2 points.
  • Sims that attended university and reached at least their Junior year (for the 2YD version) or Senior year (for the 3YD version) before dropping out or being expelled get 3 points.
  • Sims who graduated university get 4 points.
  • Theoretically, sims who have graduated university and have a specific token in their inventories can have 5 points, but as of right now there aren't any careers with this option.

Each career then has a number of points that are needed for promotion to each level. Some careers can let sims be promoted even though they don't have enough points, but they'll have to get lucky for that to work.

Here are the points needed for each career:

Careers: Medicine, Science, Natural Science, Law, Education
LevelPoints Required
1 - 32
4 - 53
6 - 104
Chance of passing limit: None whatsoever. Sorry sims.

Careers: Business, Law Enforcement, Military, Show Business, Journalism, Architecture, Intelligence, Oceanography
LevelPoints Required
10
2 - 31
4 - 52
6 - 73
8 - 104
Chance of passing limit: 20% per attempt if the sim is only one point short, 10% per attempt if the sim is two points short, 5% per attempt if the sim is 3 points short, and no chance otherwise.

Careers: Athletics, Culinary, Politics, Slacker, Artist, Paranormal, Music, Entertainment, Dance
LevelPoints Required
1 - 30
4 - 51
6 - 72
8 - 103
Chance of passing limit: 30% per attempt

As a default, Criminal, Adventurer and Gamer careers do not care about education, nor do any custom careers unless the career is updated to work with this mod.

What about promotions from chance cards?
When a promotion comes up in a chance card, this mod runs the same checks as it would for any other promotion, and so the promotion may not happen. In that case, you will still get the promotion bonus (as otherwise you wouldn't get anything for a successful chance card pick). This is also true for the reputation bonus promotion you can sometimes get.

What about getting a job in the first place?
The Artist, Natural Science, Paranormal, and Show Business careers no longer require a degree. Medicine, Science, Natural Science, Education, and Law, all do require at least 2 education points (a C or above at high school).

What do I need to download?
Get either "KittyCarey-DoctorsNeedDegrees-3YD" or "KittyCarey-DoctorsNeedDegrees-2YD" and all of the folder of Careers, the easy Token check and the easy Memory check.

What if I want one of the careers to have different rules?
Open up that career in SimPE and have a look at the BCON file called "Education Requirements by Level" (if the only thing you can change is the labels, you've got the wrong one and need to click on the other one). Lines 1-10 are the points needed for each level, and the chances of passing the points check with insufficient points are in lines 13-16 (as percentages, so out of 100).

How do I update a custom career to use this mod?
I'm working on a folder of SimPE extracts to add to custom careers to enable this mod. The code will only be read by the game if the rest of this mod is installed.

Updates:
Version 1.1: Custom careers now default to the Careers that a diploma is useful category, so redownload if you have a custom career. Instructions for adding custom careers to other categories are also available here
Version 1.2: Fixed an issue with the wrong messages appearing when a sim owns their own car. Fixed an issue with the wrong amounts of money given/removed for chance cards at high levels (I hope).
Version 1.3: Fixed an issue with wrong bonuses at higher job levels.
Version 1.4: Fixed an issue with chance card bonuses (thanks LimeyYoshi).
Version 2.0: Redesigned the code for more options for custom careers, or for editing individual careers to suit preferences.

Thanks:
Cyjon, whose Edukashun iz Gud was the base for this mod, and whose code I have shamelessly used thanks to their generous 'don't reinvent the wheel' policy.
All the makers of SimPE, without which this mod would never have made any progress.
And jonasn, who keeps answering all my questions.
