Charise curled up on her chair, groaning. “What a crappy birthday,” she muttered softly. “Happy seventeenth, Charise.”

She was ill, her father and grandmother were out of town, and on top of everything else, the weather was terrible. She’d tried calling Ophelia, but Ophelia, along with her parents and brother, were on vacation. S was also on vacation, and wasn’t due back until tomorrow. Sheridon and Gideon were working at a daycare for the summer, so they couldn’t come over to check on her. She’d even tried calling Dunstan, but he didn’t answer his cell phone.

“This has got to be the worst birthday ever,” Charise muttered to herself. “I don’t know which order it’s going to happen-- puke or pass out-- but I know they’ll both happen eventually, if I wait long enough. At least it‘s the evening now. The crappy birthday is almost over.”

Just then, the doorbell rang.

“Who the hell would bother me on a day like today?” Charise said aloud, looking out the window.

Outside, standing in the rain, was Dunstan. He made no move to shield himself from the rain, but simply stood there, letting it soak his clothes.

“He’s crazy,” Charise said softly. For a few seconds, she felt as though she were an outsider, looking at a complete stranger, one with dark eyes and tousled blonde hair.

Charise eased herself out of bed and down the stairs of her home. She slowly made her way to the door, certain with every step that she would faint. She slowly opened the front door. Dunstan smiled kindly and said, “Nasty weather we’re having, eh?”

Charise began to nod, and as she did so, everything began to darken. The last thing she heard before passing out was Dunstan yell her name as he reached out to catch her.

Several minutes later, Charise came to in her bed. Dunstan knelt beside the bed, looking concerned. “Don’t scare me like that again,” he said softly.

“I didn’t do it on purpose,” Charise replied weakly. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to give you your birthday present,” Dunstan said.

“Oh?” she replied.

“This,” Dunstan said, removing a beautiful earring and necklace set from his pocket.

“How pretty!” Charise gasped.

“That’s not all,” Dunstan continued. Charise tilted her head, puzzled. Dunstan laid down on the bed beside Charise. He leaned over and began to kiss her. “Happy birthday, beautiful,” he whispered.
