It’s been months since Charming and Sno first arrived in their new kingdom. They’ve been wholly accepted by their loyal subjects, and feel right at home. They’ve settled into a quiet routine. This morning after breakfast, Sno is playing with Selena while Charming reads in the library. Esther is busy managing the castle. It seems a normal day in the palace. Then, there is a knock on the door.
Sno leaves Selena in the nursery with a handmaiden and hurries to answer the door herself. She is shocked to see it is her Stepmother.
“Why, Queen Daynes…what a pleasant surprise…” Sno lies through gritted teeth.
“Yes. Well, I had to come and meet the new royals everyone is talking about…” Regina replies. “Word is, they are gracious and kind. I knew it had to be you and Charming.”
Sno ignores her blatant attempt at an insult, and in an annoyed tone asks, “Would you care for some hot cider? Shall I show you to the common area?’
“What? No. I only want to see my daughter.” Regina replies coldly.
Sno can feel herself tensing. “She is not your daughter, Stepmother. Father gave her to me. She is my daughter. Charming and I are raising her. That is how it is, and that is how it will be…” Sno says pointedly.
Regina purses her lips. “And what? Do you assume that because she is not with me, she will be good?” She sneers. “Do you really think that because you are good and noble that she, too, will grow up virtuous?” Regina laughs. “My dear, evil is born. It’s not learned or made. Mark my words. Selena is her mother’s daughter. Heed my warning before it’s too late…” Regina continues.
Sno becomes enraged at Regina “How dare you insult Selena! We are going to prove you wrong! Selena will be a beautiful and loyal ruler. She will be true, honest, and noble! Your empty threats mean nothing to me!
Regina replies kindly, “My sweet Sno, I’m simply warning you. This is not an empty threat, someday you will see and understand.”
Sno sighs and opens the door back up, before asking politely, “Would you kindly leave?”
“Gladly.” Regina replies with disgust. “Just remember time has a way of changing things…”
Regina walks out.
Sno closes the door heavily and stands with her back against it. She’s angry, hurt, and confused.
“Who was at the door?” Charming asks, coming into the hall.
“Oh… it was Regina.” Sno replies, staring at the ground.
“What did she want?” Charming asks, concerned, as he pulls her into a hug.
Sno feels fearful. “She wanted Selena.” She says with tears in eyes. “She was trying to convince me that Selena is lost no matter what we do. I am beside myself now. I can’t believe she would stoop so low” Sno replies with a frown.
Charming bites his lip. “Dearest, we cannot control the future, nor can we control what Regina does. All we can control is what we do.” he says, trying to comfort her.
Sno smiles as she embraces him. Fear still lingers in her mind.
“Charming, I know she killed my father. I know there is no way to prove it. She got away with it, and it hurts every day. We know what she is capable of! We know what lengths she is willing to go through to get what she wants!” Sno exclaims.
Charming sighs. “Love, we will do our best to stop her advances. But we will not plan our future around them. Alright?” he asks, taking her chin and forcing her eyes to meet his.
“Alright love. You’re right. We can’t live our future in fear of our past.” she agrees.
Charming is displeased with Regina’s visit. To see Sno in this state of worry puts him on edge. It leaves him feeling powerless, which he hates.
