I'm so glad all of you like the house so much, thank you for the nice and flattering comments. :lovestruc

@Justpetro a great build! I noticed you used mostly expensive furniture, so your Sim will probably enjoy the house even more than you do!

@Voeille yes, if I knew one thing, it was that my Evans home won't have red in it. Black-white-red is actually my favorite color scheme, but it was really overused in modern builds during this contest, and I tried to provide something new and fresh for each round. The "horizontal brown thing" shaping the structure with columns is "Transversal by joy structure" object. It can be found in build mode, in section with various architectural pieces:

@simsfreq I'm so glad that you like it too. :lovestruc I use wall decor combined with "moveobjects on" and "booprop snapobjectstogrid false" - all the time while decorating, and use it a lot, especially when I don't have to worry about the budget. It offers a lot of creative possibilities for No CC builders. I took some pictures for you, to show you few examples from this lot:

This was my initial inspiration for this round. But, limited with the possibilities of a No CC game, I had to adjust colors to the available material, and adapt the structure's shape to suit Jo's foundation.

Very clever use of deco objects, MystAngel and thanks for showing us how you used them

Want a specific style of house or community building? Why not take a look at my profile and see what I build and then come ask me to make it!

Ohh I see! I hadn't realised that was out of grid. I thought it was just a clever use of windows which were on a wall already occupied by something else (so they don't cut out the hole). This is indeed very useful. I'll use it in the future. Thanks for sharing!

Red or not, all the Evans homes have been lovely, and everyone should be proud of their creations no matter what color was used. :lovestruc

Red and black remains an amazing combo. I went for blue/green simply because of all the windows, the color of the pool was my starting point. And the best objects for that are in the expensive category. I like the expensive furniture - the only problem is that they are expensive

The plus point was James Evans. He is totally adorable and I had a lot of fun test playing him - he is also the first Sim to get five pics from me, and action shots to boot I did not even cheat, he worked out, did yoga, worked out, swam, and then did that dive ALL by himself!

@MystAngel - gorgeous house, and thank you for the tips

For my round 4 play-a-long I went for the Newman family. I decided on a Victorian style home, thinking that perhaps this fur, feather and fish loving family would go for an old-fashioned home. I admit I got the inspiration from some of you. But isn't that part of what this contest is all about?

@MystAngel thanks for the tips! I’ve never noticed that horizontal decoration, I’ll look for it next time when I open the game I guess I should build no CC more often to discover more Maxis objects I never use And your house made me want use more CFE in the last round (all I did was CFE halfwalls in my round 4 entry so I could use the pagoda roofs a bit differently), hopefully there will be an opportunity for it And I also hope the lot will be a bit larger, a community lot seems a great opportunity to make my favourite arched bridges.

@Mom50409 your house made me think I very rarely use that MG set, even when I built a large Victorian house I didn’t really use it, but now I don’t even have much opportunity as I’ve been building and playing in desert hoods recently, so such a lot wouldn’t fit

MystAngel i love your house ( specially the form of the roof and that you try to do something different.)( also i loved your Rhodes house, i dont know why but always when i see a house mixed with a lot of things and styles, i say oh its howls moving castle.)
Mom I always liked victorian houses ( mansions and gardens was one of the expansions that i buy, the others i obtain it in ultimate collection.) I hope see that you creates soon.
Me im this moment trying the alternative house ( generally i dont draw a blueprint, however in this contest,i decide to draw it in a squared notebook. )

Okay, all my pics are showing the correct roof now and I can enjoy my no-CC bonus, guilt-free!

The big budget is really letting people splash out and show off, and of course we're all tacitly challenging each other to up our games. Using the move objects aperture glitch for architectural deco is brilliant!

I've just had a close look at MystAngel's house, and am lost in admiration. Part of me thinks I should go back home to Veronaville and give up. When it comes to building skill, I'm not even remotely in the same league. I'm not even in the Fourth Division. And MystAngel isn't the only one who's light years ahead of me. People are building lots that I couldn't even imagine.

I won't give up though, partly because I'm submitting my entries on behalf of the Veronaville form of Jones & Moltke Ltd., and Andrew would never speak to me again if I gave up.

One thing that comes up again and again is CFE. I know that CFE stands for Constrained Floor Elevation, and I strongly suspect that Maxis used it to build the City House in Nightlife (it has a much higher foundation than usual). But beyond that I haven't a clue about how to use CFE or what to use it for. Mootilda made a Grid Adjuster, which evidently can do much the same job as CFE, but, if I don't understand the purpose and use of CFE, I can't really understand how to use the Grid Adjuster either. I feel that some understanding of CFE could be a great help in providing an interesting roofline on buildings in the modern style, like the one that James Evans wants. So could someone please point me in the direction of a "CFE for Dummies" tutorial?

AndrewGloria, I am so glad you posted that. It is exactly what I have been feeling as this contest has been moving along. I completely feel out of my league, and I have even said terrible things to myself about my homes in moments of sheer insecurity. I just need to hang in there and do what I can do the best I can until this is over. However, I am probably scarred and will *probably* never do a contest again that has mixed skill levels. I know I'm getting better though, even if my homes are still quite 'pedestrian' to the Masters, haha. I have built homes for every family for every round thus far, then I got bored and went back to build ones for the Application Round lot for each family. Talk about fun! I have done the Lamberts, Newmans and just finished Evans up. It's tricky at 25k, but doable! (So. Many. Screenshots.)

I also am not at all educated on CFE, AndrewGloria. I don't even know how to turn things at that fun angle to place things in corners! I know sometimes that makes items unusable (right?), so I just leave everything facing the normal way for fear that if I do upload something, the player will have to rearrange the furniture for them to play. I would hate that to happen to someone. Anywho... I do get where you are coming from, but you know what? We have improved just by being here and TRYING. We give it our all and put our best work on the table, and that (at the very least), I guess we should be proud of.

Hang in there, buddy! (...and let me know if you find CFE for Dummies)

Default The Rhodes Family. No CC. Flamingos in the Price picture.
Patter will be edited. Pictures ... I hope not.

There IS a real variation of this house out there. Well, kind of: https://www.architecturaldesigns.co...r-entry-42400db . I was admittedly going through a really dry spell with the Rhodes family until I saw this house; a combo of THREE different styles, actually. I cut it down to two. Well, maybe if you include the grain bin, that's three. I thought it fascinating that the design combined different styles, and thought "That would be so Rhodes!" Thank you, whoever designed this house.

Andrew one of the simplest ways to start at CFE is to build a curved bridge. Like I did here: http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=563407
http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title...ridge_Tutorials

It's used to make decorative items mostly. But it can be used to attach a garage next to a house on a foundation or make a dummy level (very short wall ontop of a normal wall) Sometimes when doing a roof it needs to sit a little bit higher so the dummy level is helpful to do that. If you look at my recent service station lot that I uploaded the flat roof is actually a dummy level. I used that instead of stage tool. I also used CFE to make those service station sign posts and the tire stand. That is actually 3 dummy level walls. A very easy way to make a wall shorter is build a box, cover with floor tile, turn on the CFE cheat and place some modular stairs on top. That drops part of the tile lower. Then you just level it off with that terrain level tool. Then turn the cheat off.

@Goldenbtrfly Turning things on an angle is a cheat. If you get yourself a cheat file all you have to do is grab your item and use the < > keys to turn it, as simple as that. You can have my cheat file if you like, only it is long. Lots of cheats with shortcut names.

I have a cheat file too. It's called a userstartup.cheat file and you can find instructions on how to make it here It's incredibly useful, especially if you are a builder.

Thank you for the tutorial, Jo! (And Andrew and Goldenbtrfly for asking!) I've been wondering about CFE for a while, but all I found where Sims 3 Tutorials.

I also think I'm out of my league here, but that's okay. I don't have to win the contest. As long as I have fun and learn something on the way, I won something for me In german you can say "win experience", but I guess in english experience is gained, not won.

@AndrewGloria, @Goldenbtrfly

I built for a long time without using cheats or CFE - (well, I still seldom use CFE, only for bridges and flat roofs) - but a certain moderator once told me that it was time for me to start using cheats. So I did (Thank you, @Karen Lorraine ) Try them out one by one, the building cheats are really not difficult to use except for CFE, where you kind of have to plan a bit more carefully. (Phaenoh uses it very effectively as well).

A huge problem is that most tutorials lead to dead links. So one has to figure out a lot of stuff on your own.

One thing with cheats: not all objects will work if you place them at an angle. Dining rooms pushed closer to a dining table don't work either, you have to replace them before Sims can use them. So you also need to test that.

@gazania, I love your house!

Chairs and tables can work with the quarter tile cheat but you have to get the table and chairs in exactly the right spots in relation to each other.

yavannatw thank you for that. I just finished putting over the first judges scores, so I will use your list in the morning.

It's not a decoration, it's a shelf, under surfaces.

Andrew, the way I started with CFE was by looking at MikeInside's pool tutorials, many years ago in the beginnings of the game. I think you'd probably like those, and your sims would certainly relish yet another excuse to swan about in their swimwear

http://mikeinside.modthesims2.com/tutorials.html

Some of these tutorials are so old that they cover mock ups of building tools which were later added to the game, which also makes them useful for people who play with fewer expansions installed

Thank you, justpetro! And a picture of my sweet hippies. These two were constant lovey-dovey. Three lightning bolts!

I'm almost tempted to clone them and put them in my good hood. I've grown a bit fond of them.

My silo might actually be a grain bin. I never knew there was that much of a difference! http://www.ilfbpartners.com/farm/th...bins-and-silos/ Hence, for now, it's a grain bin. It's not blue and it's made of metal.

More on silos v. grain bins: https://breslinfarms.com/2012/10/30/those-arent-silos/ . My entry is educational, if nothing else!

The roof of the grain bins I used to base my build, though, look too rounded for the octagonal roof, so I'm staying with the dome. I tried the silo with the octagonal roof, and I really didn't like it. And I refuse to try CFE-ing the roof again! That looked even worse! So I'm doing a bit of an interpretation here.
